Logic Pro 9 Importing OMF Files From DP5 (DP8)

Hi. Long time since my last visit here but somebody always has the right answer. I'll thank everyone in advance.

Anyway, I currently use Logic 9 for audio projects but have quite a back log of DP5 projects. Now DP5 no longer works with my system but I would like to have access to these projects in the future. I should also add that I would prefer to continue to work in Logic 9 rather than keep up with DP8.

I have downloaded the DP8 trial for 30 days and am able to export the OMF files into Logic. This leads me to the questions:

1) The 1st screenshot of Logic shows separate L and R audio tracks for every instrument recorded. Leave them alone? Play both?

2) The 2nd screenshot shows the DP8 prompt asking if I want to Reference, Copy or Consolidate the audio files. I'm thinking just reference to save disk space. Right?

3) 3rd screenshot : It seems most logical to save my new Logic 9 project files in the same folder as the original DP project file. This way the referenced audio files will be right there as well. Same folder, same drive, etc.

Hope I didn't give too much background but just trying to make it clear.

Older versions of DP used deinterleaved SD2 files, hence the separate L & R files in Logic. See my comment in #2 below.

If you select Copy, this will reveal options to save as .aif and... Interleaved. Choosing these options during the OMF export will give you single track stereo files per instrument which is much better than having separate L & R files/tracks per instrument.

Since you want to continue working in Logic rather than DP, I was going to suggest that you create a DP to Logic folder, then inside this folder create a new folder for each tune/project, drag each DP project into it's respective new folder. Export to OMF (saving to the respective new project folder), then import into Logic, and finally saving the Logic project to the new project folder.

But, if you choose Copy and Interleaved as in #2 above, you can leave the DP projects where there are, but save the OMF file to a newly created project file where your Logic project will also be saved. This will require extra hard drive space but will result in cleaner Logic projects.

Depending upon the size of your DP projects you can archive them to DVD and/or an external hard drive.

Trying to digest the last part you wrote. I've read it 3 or 4 times.
So, in the end I can/may delete the original DP files and folders completely, correct? This would be to conserve external HD space.

You're welcome.

Regarding the last part, if you choose the Copy and Interleave options during OMF export, you'll have new audio files which will loaded into Logic when importing the OMF file.

So yes, you can if you need to, erase the DP projects after backing them up. Or leave them in place if hard drive space is not an issue. I have several years worth of DP files on an external hard drive. In general, I like to keep my hard drive "work space" free for new projects. Recently completed projects will remain in place for while but will eventually be archived to a separate ext hd.
