Logic Pro 9 improving string sounds

Edgold

Logician
I'm still a beginner in Logic and am trying to get the sounds, particularly the strings to sound as good as possible. In my Logic version of the opening of the Elgar Enigma Variations (from my own original MIDI sequence) I've used various plug-ins which I have been told add up to too much chorus.

This is a revision I did but it was suggested that I remove these plug-ins and use sends of modified track duplicates to achieve a better result. Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

Ed, I had the same reaction upon listening to this. I tried going through your string tracks and disabling (Option-click) all the Mod-Del and Ensemble plug-ins, and to my ear it sounds a lot better like that. If you have the CPU power, then doubling those parts with a different type of string might bring some more realism to your sound, as has been suggested.

I recently bought the PLAY Symphonic Gold library which was around $500 and I'm pretty happy with how much better that makes my orchestras sound;

I'm sure others will chime in with their favorite string libraries.

Hi Sonny,

Thanks for your input. All these libraries seem around the same price though one of my needs is for a "sul ponticello" sample with perhaps a "sul tasto" thrown in. I also have no idea how to deal with these sound fonts in Logic and can't find the folder where they are supposed to be deposited. (It's still rather difficult to find anything in Lion!)

Hey Ed, the PLAY libraries have their own player which appears as a plug-in instrument in Logic. Many instruments have multi-patches that allow you to change articulations by holding different midi keys (outside the instrument's range) while you play the part. I'm not in front of my Logic rig now, so I can't say whether the Gold library has sul ponticello or sul tasto samples, but I wouldn't be hugely surprised if it did, there seem to be quite a few to choose from. Maybe someone else can confirm..?

EDIT: I'm home now and looked through the Gold Strings, and there is indeed a "Sul Pont" among the Effects. Didn't see sul tasto though.
