Logic Pro X Input Gain Field and Knob

I had my audio interface off accidentally, and was using the output and input device set to "using built in output and Built in Microphone." It was then I noticed the active Input Gain Field and Knob on the top of the channel strip. It seems like this knob only works when using built in output and built in microphone. Why would this be the case? It seems like useful feature. Here's a screen shot. Thanks.

The Gain plugin can certainly be used to increase the level of an incoming signal, but the audio device control changes things on the interface...on my Zoom if I only use Gain in Logic any recordings made on the Zoom won't have proper levels.

I have been known to pull a bass track recorded at peaks of -80 dB, used 4 Gain plugins to get it bumped up to usable ;-)

The one controls hardware gain, the other "after the fact" in the box levels.

Thanks again facej. My audio interface doesn't have input gain field and knob. But it does other things well.
