Logic Pro insert a 1 quarter bar

I have a song and I need to insert a 1 quarter bar drum fill before the chorus of the song.

However, when I do that, the rest of the song tracks will always be 1 quarter offset from the regular bars, how do I go about keeping the structure of the song, and just insert the extra bar without offsetting the rest of the whole song?

maybe I am misunderstanding. You would just add the fill on the drum track, so it would not affect regions on other tracks.

For example, if your song is in 4/4 and your chorus starts on bar 33, you add the 1 beat fill to beat 4 of bar 32.

If you want the fill after bar 32 but before bar 33, then you would need to make bar 32 a bar of 5/4 but of course that would mean moving everything at bar 33 (all regions) 1 beat later. This is done with the menu:

Edit > Cut/Insert Time

which can globally insert or remove however many bars/beats you want.

Thank you, I tried to go to edit-cut/insert but I there is no option to change the bar from 4/4 to 4/5 etc

I find that when inserting anything other than whole bars, Logic asks whether or not to insert a time signature. If not then it's easy enough to do manually:

in this case (e.g. adding 1 beat at the end of bar 32)

Move the playhead to bar 32.

  • Change time sign nature in the transport display to 5/4
  • Move playhead to bar 33
  • Change time signature back to 4/4
(You could also have added a bar of 1/4 at bar 33 and then back to 4/4/ but I think 5/4 looks better)

Thanks a lot, it works!

That's good, but I still think you should get a dialogue from Logic when inserting a fraction of a bar, because always in that case some adjustment needs to be made to the time signature and Logic is able to do that automatically in this situation.

In Logic 10.5.1, there is no Edit > Cut/Insert Time. I also want to add a quarter note rest to my whole project (drum loops, software instruments and me on bass, etc), but when I try to grab everything and shift it to the right a few beats, all the drum tracks change and sound crazy because they're no longer starting on the 1.
Also, when I do this:

  • Change time sign nature in the transport display to 5/4
  • Move playhead to bar 33
  • Change time signature back to 4/4

This doesn't work. Each time I move the playhead to a certain spot, then change the time signature, it changes it for the whole piece, not just that bar. And what is the transport display? Is that the top middle black box with Bar, Beat, Tempo etc? That's where I'm changing the time signature, but it messes up all the subsequent drum tracks in the song. Thanks in advance. The song is here, btw: Serendipity – Matt&More

Interesting. You have way more options under Edit than I do. I wonder if it's because I'm using the Trial version of Logic. I've been using GarageBand for years on my old iMac, but got myself a Mac Mini 8 weeks ago, and that's how long I've been using Logic. If I buy the software, I assume I'll get that extra functionality, although I was told there were no limitations in the Trial version, except that it expires in 90 days.

@Matt Fischer: You need to turn on advanced tools, that is hugely important in order to allow logic to function fully, as opposed to being a sort of "Garage Band Plus". Anyway, go to Logic Pro-Preferences-Advanced Tools. I would turn them all on, but at the very least, Audio, Midi and Advanced Editing.

kind regards

Ohhh... hadn't noticed that yet, lol. That changes things. Thanks very much.
