Logic Pro 9 Installing Logic in custom folder

I like to keep my music apps in a subfolder, inside the apps folder.

That seems to work fine, but when I tried to install 9.1.4, the installer complained that no valid version was found in the apps directory. I don't recall that happening with previous updates.

It was easily fixed, I just moved Logic to the apps folder, installed the update and then moved Logic back to the subfolder.

But this got me thinking. Do I risk running into problems if I use custom folders for some apps? For Logic in particular of course. Does anyone know what Apple recommends?

I do have some stability issues with Logic, but I've attributed them to certain third party plugs. I had similar issues with those plugs in Ableton Live and running Live directly from the apps folder didn't seem to make any difference.

I'm sorry if this thread belongs to the OS section rather than the Logic 9 section! It's a little bit of both I suppose.

It happens with any version of Logic not in the Apps folder. Invariably, after any Logic update, we get a plethora of posts asking about this very issue. Logic must be in the Apps folder to be found by the updater, and we mention this in FAQ 13.

Ah, well, my teeth are getting longer and my memory gets weaker for every day. 😀 And I started out with 9.0x something, so I haven't updated that many times.

But anyway, updating disregarded, is using a custom folder for Logic a potential problem?

If you don't want automatic updates, then there are probably no issues. Suggestion: leave the application where it belongs and put an alias to the application into your Music Apps folder. That way you can find it where you expect it to be and Mac OS X/Logic are still in the correct spot, so updates will work.

Hm, automatic updates - so I might miss out on Pro Apps updates if it's not in the apps directory? That's a compelling reason to keep it there. I'll take your advice, thanks folks!
