Logic Pro Issue:Logic Transmits Sysex when I change channel

Hi

I'm sure this is messing with my external synths, although I could be wrong. I'm having problems with my DSI Tetra and Prophet 12 every time I change from midi channel to midi channel the two synths either go silent or change sounds or a controller change signal messes with the sound, also on top of this it happens even if I touch a fader or try and bounce or track from midi to audio. There is a whole lot of crazy stuff happening.
I have just noticed that when I change channels my 'midi activity' panel shows a brief sysex transmission output every time (it also shows a brief CC01 on the input, but I'm assuming that is pretty harmless for now??)
Can anyone shed some light on what is going on. I'm sure it's a single click away to stop doing it because I can't see any reason why it is needed.
This of course means the the synths are completely useless in Logic.

Thanks in advance.

Cheers
Justin

Hi Justin,

Check this:
In the main window, look at the Inspector for one of your MIDI tracks.
Below the Region area (you may have to close it via the little triangle) is the Track section.
It should have Port, then Channel, then Program. If the box next to Program is checked, then un-check it, as this will send program change info to your hardware and maybe this is what's causing the problems.

Let us know...

Hey Colin,
Thanks for the reply. Yeah I did think that too and no, none of the tracks have the Program Box checked. I also thought it could have been the No Reset box at the bottom as I've had to check that sometimes for my orchestral samples in VSL. But that hasn't had any effect either. Cheers again...

Hi Justin,

Maybe try going into record mode, then do all the changing channels etc and see what exactly is recorded onto the track.

Some hardware synths have a thing called "active sensing" where they send out MIDI requests every few secs. It's possible you're picking these up, though that wouldn't account for all the strange behaviour you describe.

How are your external synths connected? Do you have a Multi-Instrument cabled to each synth?

Hi Colin,

Nice idea and I gave it a try. Being sysex though it seems like it's not track specific and nothing is recorded to the track. I'm not sure if this is because it's not from the keyboard as an input. The only thing that triggers the messages is the qwerty keyboard or the mouse by clicking on the screen.
I've done a whole bunch of troubleshooting over the last day like disconnect all my gear and try everything separately, I've used another audio interface, changed midi cables etc etc.

How are your external synths connected? Do you have a Multi-Instrument cabled to each synth?

You mean the multi-instrument within logic? - They are all multi channel midi channels in logic.
Or how are they externally connected? They are all connected via midi cable directly out of the RME UFX. I have connected them with USB but I've always had sync issues with USB.

Thanks again for your continued help.

Hi Justin,

I was talking about connections in Logic.
Actually, first you must have your hardware configured in Audio MIDI Setup - I'm assuming you've done that.

In Logic, in my Environment, I have several hardware synths connected. for example:

JV2080.png

This is a JV2080 connected to MIDI port 9 with channel 1 selected. The easiest way to connect to the various MIDI channels is to simply grab a number within the multi and drag it onto a track in the Main Window. Are you addressing several MIDI channels from one track? This may cause problems.

You should see/record any SysEx messages, as long as the [Syst.Exclusive] button is switched on.

Does this strange stuff happen in a brand new empty Project? Try using one of the Logic templates, not your autoload project.

We've gotta solve this.... :eeek:

Hi Colin,

Well I seem to have 'removed' the problem...not solved it...just removed it. I thought I'd start from scratch with a blank logic session rather than from my template (which I'm embarrassed that I hadn't tried it yet) and the problem seems to have gone away. I don't know why, I'm still none the wiser, but it's gone.
So I thought, great now I have to go and redo my templates, but the even stranger thing is my other sessions have now been fixed as well. ??????

So I'm completely baffled. The reason why I hadn't thought of starting from a clean session is that I had done that just recently to clean out years of using the same template. So it was the last thing on my mind.

I'm happy to leave this one in the 'I have no idea and we'll never know' pile. There isn't anyway of recreating the issue now anyway. I'll be sure to let you know if anything changes, but for now, again, thanks for your help.

Cheers,
Justin

I know this kind of after the horse has bolted, but do you (or have you in the recent past) got any control surfaces configured/atrached?
