Linear Phase EQ questions

Hi. I always thought linear phase EQ was totally transparent (no phase/time-smearing) but I've read conflicting stuff about 'ringing' or changes to transient response in FIR/linear phase EQ'd audio. I also don't know if I'm just reading such info in the wrong context - there seems to be next to no good info about the use of linear phase EQ in mixing, online.

Can anyone elaborate on any issues/ideas around linear phase EQ?
