Elephant in the room?

And your point is....?

Logic X is a significant upgrade that is, figuratively speaking, on the order of the transition from OS9 to OSX.

It's a work in progress. What will you say when it reaches a level of maturation?

The "point" is that its a huge number of fixes, some pretty basic, and it's the second update. I doubt Apple would let a major release of iPhoto out the door at that state of development. Sure it will mature and stabilize, but wouldn't it be better if an application ostensibly targeted at people who make their living from it, was a little closer to that point?

Point well taken. But, you can still run the latest version of L9.

Same was true with the unfinished release of FCPX as FCP7 continued to work on the same Mac to allow the user to complete projects. Many loved to draw attention to the missing features in the initial release of FCPX but they got stuck in time either by being uninformed or deliberately ignoring the fact that FCPX became whole a few updates later...

I started with OSX as of Panther 10.3. My understanding is that the initial release of OSX was...an unfinished work in progress. The solution at that time was the dual boot G4.

So nothing new here.

L9 is a phenomenal top-rated DAW that's still works. Logic X will become whole soon.

IMO it's unusual for a first release to be as solid as 10.0.0 was. Add to that the sheer complexity of an audio app like logic and the rapid response to bugs, I'm pretty impressed. There is definitely quite a way to go with bug fixes though (I'm logging at least 1-2 a day.)
I think the comparison to iPhoto is a bit unfair, it simply doesn't have that many permutations of actions compared with logic. I'm sure no one uses logic in the same way I do, the same can be said for all power users. As long as the fixes proceed at the current rate I'm happy.
Just remember to log all the bugs you encounter!

Yes, OS X 10.0 and 10.1 were pretty bad, and 10.0 was billed as a beta. And IIRC, Apple made it very easy and usually free to get upgrades at 10.2 which worked very well for me.

As you say, L9 is still there and works fine. But I still think Apple did not vet this well before putting in the App Store. Another example from another thread: the Apple DLSMusicDevice used in LX 10.0.2 causes a crash. Hard to imagine how that would have slipped through a proper test plan.

Maybe most people think it's OK for so much of the growing pains phase of the development cycle to occur after commercial release, but I think that's a big step backwards.
