Logic Pro 8 Logic 8 on my Mac PB G4

Hi there

I am a professional musician and a relatively new mac user.
I recently acquired a 2nd hand Powerbook G4 12" and just got Logic 8.

I haven't installed it yet as I'd like to know how well Logic 8 will run on my Mac.

My specs are as follows:

Mac Powerbook 12"
1,5GHz PowerPC G4 processor
1,25 GB DDR SDRAM
OS X 10.4.11 Tiger

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hi there, welcome to the LUG.

It may not be what you want to read, but IMO that Mac is underpowered for Logic 8. It would be OK with Logic 6, maybe with Logic 7. Along with the lack of processing power, it has very little RAM.

I have Logic 8, I will have to see if I could swap it with someone for an older version, I can't exactly afford the machine and OS that I'd like, so I'm gonna somehow have to make what I've got work.

Jettison the G4...

My vote is to keep your Logic 8 and jettison the G4. I tried Logic 8 on a G4 tower with dual 8.67 MHz processors, and it ran so slow (molasses screen re-draws) that I sold it and bought a G5 dual 2.3 GHz. The G5 machines are a good value at this point, but I would get at least a dual 2.0. The G5s will run Leopard and even the initial release of Logic 9, but you may have trouble getting the correct install disk, later releases do not install 9.0, but a later, Intel only release.

I jumped from 5.5 to 8, and skipped 6 and 7 altogether. People on the forum seem to think 8 is not so great, but it is incredibly better than previous editions, if not for all the instruments and loops that came with it, then for the hard copy manuals, nice if you are learning it.
