Logic Pro 9 Logic and Vienna ensemble pro server

Hi All,
I'm having major problems with Logic and the Vienna Ensemble Pro server with Stylus. I have a maddening intermittent connection problem between the 2. I can play the loops in Stylus within Vienna but Logic doesn't always trigger them. If I reconnect with Vienna is sometimes works but not always and then the connection is lost again.

I'm going a little crazy with this. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

OS 10.5.8
latest Vienna Ensemble
latest Stylus

thanks,
Judith

Hello Judith

Are you sure that VE pro is good for 10.5

I doubt, it is wrote for 10.6

10.5 does not know how to handle 64 bit

You should use VE pro 32bit

Hi Cyril,
VEPro is fine for 10.5. Jay Asher told me to use it in 64 bit mode even though my OS was 10.5.8. I'm a bit confused about all of this and just want a stable system.
cheers,
Judith

Hi Judith

Who is Jay Asher ? Does he know what he is talking about ?

Why do you have a VE PRO 32 bit and a VE 64 PRO bit ?
Why do you have a VE PRO server 32 bit and a VE PRO server 64 bit ?

MAC OS X 10.5 IS NOT 64 bit !

You need 10.6 to have 64 bit

If you are using 64 bit plug-ins you need 10.6 !

You can use 32 bit plug-ins in Logic 9 with 10.6

Hope that's helps

Best

Hi Cyril,

Vienna Ensemble Pro comes in 32 and 64 bit. I'm talking about version 3 and now version 4, I believe. Jay Ascher writes books about Logic and works in L.A. setting up film composers with Vienna Ensemble, among other things. He's a professional sound guy.

I know that OS 10.5 is not 64 bit and yes, I also know about 10.6 and 64 bit. I was surprised by Jay's suggestion to use the 64 bit server which is what I'm using tonight and it's working fine.

No need to use capital letters though. I understand and read English quite comfortably🙂

Thanks for trying to help.

cheers,
Judith

HI Judith

> No need to use capital letters though. I understand and read English quite comfortably

You are very "susceptible", calm down !

You are just looking for trouble using 64 bit apps in 10.5

You will have crashes when you reach the memory limit of 10.5

It is like putting 95 E10 into a old car that is using 95 ; it might work 😉

So why do you say : "I'm having major problems with Logic and the Vienna Ensemble Pro server with Stylus..............

Stylus 1.9 is 64 bit !

> I'm talking about version 3 and now version 4, I believe.

Today there is no VE 4 it is VE PRO and it is 64 bit

VE 3 is 32 bit on Mac (64 and 32 bit on PC)

If I was you I will install 10.6 on a fresh disk and use it.
If you have trouble you can always go back to your 10.5

I have 10.6, Logic 9 and VE PRO (last beta) an I have made a big orchestral template that is using 14 MB of memory.
I use VE PRO standalone with Logic and IAC

It is working great 😉

Best

Hi Judith

Getting back to your original post:

I'm having major problems with Logic and the Vienna Ensemble Pro server with Stylus. I have a maddening intermittent connection problem between the 2. I can play the loops in Stylus within Vienna but Logic doesn't always trigger them. If I reconnect with Vienna is sometimes works but not always and then the connection is lost again.

I had similar problems with Vienna Ensemble and someone suggested the following:
On the channel strip in Logic where you have VE Pro, insert the Logic I/O plugin in the first effects slot, then bypass it. For some reason, this really does help. (It's at the bottom of the list, under Utility)

Hope this helps....

Okay.....
Nothing on IAC
I have no slave computer connected
I have an 8-core 2.8 GHz Mac Pro with 12 GB RAM
I'm using Logic 9.1 with Mac OS10.6.2 (in 32-bit mode)

This all works fine for me at present. I haven't moved to 64-bit mode as I don't have any memory problems thus far.

Judith,
FWIW I am using Snow Leopard, LP 9.1 (32) (so I can score, and use MC Transport)

Using VE Pro (32) (because many of my plugs are not 64) on host machine - which is a mac pro / 12 gb ram.

No IAC - but multi-timbral instruments in logic.

I am running all instances of play in logic as they seem to crash VE pro.

Not using any of the spectrasonics stuff you mentioned earlier sorry...

This is a stable set up for me...
