Logic Pro logic pro x no sound out

I have switched to logic pro x from logic 9. Most of my files are logic 7 or 9 and need conversion - ok. One of my files post conversion to new system will not give sound for certain audio tracks when played. They are not muted, and none of the tracks are soloed. When I solo one of these silent tracks I get the sound ok, but when unsoloed there is no sound. Questions:

1. How do I get the sound back?
2. How do I make the solo button appear globally in all tracks when for all projects? (I learned how to do this for a given project with advanced tools,configure track headers)

I found oddities with some of my old converted tracks. I guess they brought something with them that LogicX couldn't deal with - in most cases I think it was a softsynth that no longer functioned the same. I made a new track for each with an appropriate LogicX instrument and dragged the regions to it. Your situation seems different, as the tracks sound when soloed, but a similar approach might still eradicate the weirdness with those tracks.
