Logic Pro Logic X Recording glitch / Missing audio

Hi,

Has anyone come across this issue?

When I start to record a track on any channel all the other tracks below get cut and a piece of audio disappears from the tracks below that I am recording. The recording is fine but it cuts the track below and causing major issues with all the other tracks.

Also sometimes I get these random midi events that pop up on tracks that I am not using at the time, they seem to pop up when recording or playback or some editing processes on other unrelated tracks.

Anyone have these issues? We are a pro studio and its becoming a real hindrance to work we are considering changing to PT. I don't want to because I don't like PT but we are having some real issues.

I've never heard that a piece of audio disappears while recording. If the piece of audio gets replaced by an audio region without a signal, then you have "Auto Replace" activated and the other tracks are record enabled, probably via a group. Show the "Auto Replace" Button in the toolbar to check this and look how the group is configured if there is one.

Also sometimes I get these random midi events that pop up on tracks that I am not using at the time, they seem to pop up when recording or playback or some editing processes on other unrelated tracks.

Could also be a grouping matter. If you get MIDI regions while recording, some MIDI device sends events to your track. Don't know about events "popping up" while editing other tracks.

Hey Peter,

Thanks for your reply. Its definitely not the auto replace function and the tracks are not grouped so it must be a glitch. I will double check to make sure but I was not using groups when this was happening.

I think the midi glitch is due to my control surface Tascam DM4800. It send midi info on port 1, 2 and 3 to control the faders, and transport control. Its not a major as the events can be deleted however the missing cut audio in segments when the recording is started is strange. It only does a small little cut and the audio is completely gone in that little section. If I undo the recording on the other track the missing audio piece shows up again. I should mention that the size/length of the recorded audio is different that the missing audio piece on all the other tracks.

I will try and make a video when I am in the studio in the next few days or maybe a screen shot to illustrate the issue. Its hard to explain.

It would be very informative to see a video clip and screen shots to understand the audio cut outs as this something I've never directly experienced or read about on the web.

Does this happen with all projects? Or just the one you're currently working on?
Try opening a new Empty project template. Record a few tracks. Is this behavior still evident or not?

If the behavior is only occurring with one project file, then that file may be corrupt. If so, you can use the Project Import function to bring all of the current project's content and settings into a new Empty template. This is a very effective problem solving intervention.

Regarding the MIDI, if you need the data coming out of the various ports for various functions, then you'll just have to use the Event List filter button to isolate the junk controllers from notes, then use the Edit>Select>Similar Events, or Equal Events, or Same MIDI Channel to eliminate the junk with one click of Delete.

Depending on your set up, another option is to use the Environment Transformer to filter out the junk MIDI data before it hits the Sequencer Input.

Good point.

I use a template we created for all our work. I will create a new one and see what happens. I will do a video and screen shots as well, its easy enough with quicktime.

I will try the midi filter, but I have not used a heck of a lot but I will give it a go.

I'm not familiar with the Tascam unit and what MIDI it outputs, but a screen shot of the Clicks and Ports layer of the MIDI Environment while the Tascam is in action will be helpful. Try to show the Physical Input and the Tascam ports in addition to the MIDI monitor between the keyboard and Sequencer Input.

The attachment (Logic 9) shows a Controller on MIDI channel 8 generated by my MIDI guitar controller. I have no idea what purpose it serves but it's something I don't need. The Transformer is able to filter it out so that just notes reach the Sequencer Input.

It's possible a similar set up will work in your as long as it doesn't filter out something that you actual need. There are Environments experts here that can probably address this aspect of your system if it's beyond my simple set up.

Try to show the Physical Input and the Tascam ports in addition to the MIDI monitor between the keyboard and Sequencer Input.

Or use the free MIDI Monitor to show all MIDI travelling through your computer. This software is a must-have for your toolbox anyway, whenever you deal with MIDI.
