Logic Pro LogicPro availability on Catalina

My daughter wants to purchase LogicPro to use on her 2012 i7 Mac mini. We can purchase the latest version through my wife’s M1 Pro MacBook, but my daughter will never have access to this machine. I want to be absolutely certain, about the ability to download previous versions of LogicPro to older machines, before hitting the “Buy” button. Can I still download previous versions in 2023?

Hi there, welcome to the LUG. First thing to bear in mind: a Logic purchase is linked to an Apple ID. If both Macs run on the same ID this should not present a problem. WRT accessing an older Logic version, AFAIK if the App store actually allows you to purchase Logic on your daughter's computer, (I presume it is running Mojave or an older MacOS version, so perhaps it would be Logic 10.5 or earlier) then the version purchased should be able to run on that computer.

I would also suggest contacting Apple about this.

hth, kind regards

Mark

Thanks for the super fast reply Mark. Her Mac is running Catalina 10.15, and is the last supported Os-X version for that 2012 Mac mini. Her machine is not new enough take the current version of LogicPro from the App Store, so our only option will be to purchase on a newer Mac. Luckily, they do all share my Apple ID, so it should be possible, right? It’s so hard to find any clarification out there.
Kind regards, Jonathan.

I can't speak from personal experience Jonathan (I'm usually running the current version of logic on the current or previous OS version) so I don't want to give bad advice. You have probably read some discussions in various online resources indicating that what you suggest is (or used to be) possible, but it would make sense to try to get clarification from Apple.

kind regards

If your daughter has an own Apple ID you can log in to the Apple Store with her ID on your wifes MacBook. After this log in with your daughters Mac mini with the same ID and go to the purchased Tab. Her you get the possibility to download the last version which runs on her computer.

Sorry for this late reply but, in the last year, I had a 2017 MBP running Catalina that I downloaded a version of Logic Pro to that was compatible with that OS... A few months later, I bought a newer Mac (with a recent OS,) and I was able to use my same Apple log in and download a more current version of Logic that that newer computer.
The constant was my Apple ID. Apple seemed to know which version was appropriate for whatever hardware/system/OS I downloaded to. Hope your daughter enjoys Logic!
