Logic Pro 9 Logic's future ?

I see a lot of posts lately about Logic slowly being an all around app.
I am sure these are just rumors but I also heard that Apple is slowly killing Logic and what not.

I am quite surprised about all this since I have been with Logic since version 3.x and I am having the best time ever lately.
Everything has become so easy.
Sometimes I wonder what other people are talking about.

I have had times ( a few years back ) when I used other DAW ( mostly PT ) but, I always had Logic and it evolved into this wonderful software that works for me.
I am a guitar player so the Amp and Pedal emulations excite me.
However, there are so many other things that Logic can do a lot easier these days.

My question would be about why people are not happy with Apple's touch with Logic.

I think, Logic changed for the better after Apple purchased it.
Why do people think that Apple will slowly kill Logic?

It beats me.
May be you guys have some idea.

Necessity is the mother of invention. Constraints can definitely drive creativity. I've always tried to apply constraints to my compositional process. Today, we run the risk of being completely overwhelmed with creative options. I think plug-ins are wonderful, but they can become an addiction that leads to loss of productivity. At one point, I think I had over 350 plug-ins. How the hell can anyone make a choice when there are 40 EQs to choose from?

I'm all about defining the constraints before the work begins.

Looks like we might need the moderators to jump in and move this to one of the music forums. 🙂

Incidentally, you mention defining constraints vs plug-ins and all, and I must say that, this was something I really took into consideration when I made the move to Mac/Logic.

I knew I'd be okay w/ Logic and the included effects and synths (which I had missed so much) and that it pretty much covered all my needs, right out of the box. I was really trying to move away from my previous set up w/ lots of apps and plug-ins and all. I wanted something self-contained.

Fortunately for me, Logic not only covers that, but it's also the most inspiring (to me) application I've worked with. I was also quite pleasantly surprised by the new stuff (Amp Designer and Ultrabeat among others).

At this point, the only thing I felt the need to add was a couple of sample libraries. But, that, I was expecting.

So far, for songwriting/arranging/recording my own stuff and basic mixes, I'm still all smiles. Tomorrow's D day - I'm taking the plunge and doing my first small recording session exclusively on this set up. Can't wait!

Well good luck! I'm sure you'll be thrilled with the results.

I do have a few 3rd party plug-ins, but I can't help myself. What I do enjoy is trying to pick 5 plug-ins and say "that's it." See how far I can get. I exclude compressor/eq from the list.

To get this thread back on track, what plug-ins would you like to see added to Logic?

To be perfectly honest, at this point, I have no clue. I do know however that I have a tendency to be on the hunt for compressors and eq's. But then again, that is a pattern I'm trying to avoid, partly because I can a/b compressors and agonize over it forever.

Or then there's the creative stuff, like the Ohmboys plugs.

As mentioned earlier, I really missed some of Logic's plug-ins - took me forever to find a semi-adequate replacement for Tape Delay. Some of the filters like Spectral Gate I also missed.

So anything Apple throws in at this point will be a bonus. For what I do (songwriting, mixing my own music, putting together basic tracks for my fiancée's next album and doing little contracts here and there - usually simple things), I'm sure I'll be okay. If not, I'll let the next guy take care of it in his studio. What he does will probably have much more impact than me spending 3 hours auditioning compressors.

My only wish so far would be for more EXS libraries.

"My only wish so far would be for more EXS libraries."

Like what? I read somewhere that Logic comes with 1600 sampler instruments. Is it that you want MORE of just better quality? What sampled instruments did you buy?

See, that's where the GAS really kicks in - samples... Not that Logic falls short I guess, but the hunt for this type of piano sound or that type of acoustic drums just won't go.

Hmm, not sure I follow ya. I can say that I was pretty stoked to find a bunch of EXS sampler instruments that are not used in channel strip settings. I mean, there's tons of impressive sounding sampled analog synths in there that are a great source for building new sounds.

Agreed that there's a lot in there already. What I meant is that I'd love to see more third-party libraries in EXS format (Imperfect Samples is one of the few out there). Of course it's not a show-stopper, EXS24 already handles the conversion for a couple of those other formats and there's chickensys for the rest. Plus, I knew that before I bought Logic anyway... It's really just lazy wishful thinking on my part.

Well, EXS24 is already a very popular format. I haven't found many BIG libraries in the format, but when looking at instruments from online vendors it was not as popular as Kontakt, but still very common. Unfortunately, in order to provide Kontakt import, Apple would have to make the EXS24 as sophisticated (and complicated) as Kontakt. I don't see ANY sampler supporting Kontakt instrument importing.

Yep. At that rate, I'd much prefer that they keep EXS24 as is. As a matter of fact, EXS was also one of the many reasons I went w/ Logic. I really don't need something like Kontakt. EXS is straight forward, easy to use, powerful enough and covers all my needs. The minor drawback of having to convert libraries really isn't enough to make me look for an alternative.

And by the way, I'm glad to confirm that this first session tonight went just fine. Comping tracks in Logic is like a revelation. It's great to see that not only this is an amazing songwriting/arrangement tool but that it also fits my other needs. Happy camper here. 🙂
