music - Alt-country, jam band, jazz style. Occasional high gain solo

Have

Guitar and bass PodHD or Scuffham/RedWirez, acoustic guitar and vocals, EZ Drummer or Roland set

Logic Express 9, new macbook pro

Event 20/20 monitors

MXL 990 large condenser, an AKG large condenser that is somewhat better, Octava pair of small condensers, Beta 58s (don't use those much for recording)

Presonus Firebox, 2 Tube pre's

Thinking about replacing the presonus stuff with an Apogee Duet 2, clean up the workspace, cleaner signal. Other choice might be a better vocal mic or mic pre, but the default for now is the Duet replacing the presonus stuff which I'm thinking is the weakest link. or perhaps monitors?

Well under 1k so nothing nuts 🙂 Saving for an Axe inthe fall hopefully

Thanks fer yer help and consideration

Yea, the 20/20's are soso (at least I think so).The difference between a Firebox or an Apogee isn't as significant as the monitors, so I'd spend some of my $$$ there. Head down to your local Guitar Center and take a listen to what they have there for $500 or 600 a pair. there are some decent setups these days for little cash.

I would also suggest a better Mic-Pre/Compressor/EQ combo.. the ART Pro Channel with upgraded tubes are a great buy, and sound awesome for the $$$. Head over to the gearslutz forum and ask for the tube guy.. I bought a few tube upgrades for my mic and my mic pre's and was very pleased with the results.

Your mic collection is fine, no need to spend any $$$ there.

I'd up your budget a few hundred more if you can, get the better speakers and a better rack mount channel strip like the ART, and go from there.

The other reason I suggest the ART: if you can get used to doing some eq and compression before you hit the Firebox, your results are going to sound better right from the start.

That would be my 10 cents worth ;-)

I work in a physics lab for the last 30 years or so and have a nice tube collection 🙂

would you think the ART comp/eq is better than logic ones? and that it is preferable to do so before logic? The "soft clip" on the Apogee looked interesting
