Logic Pro Loud Volume Spike using Logic 10.8.1

I've listened to this project over 50 times while mixing and out of nowhere I got this loud volume spike on one of the channels. The level meter for the track was 700 and something. The tracks are clean of noise spikes. Unfortunately, I was too freaked out to get a screen shot, but I did see the meter. I quickly shut everything down and rebooted. Not sure if it damaged my monitors/ears or not.

I have never experienced this before using my setup (see signature) and I have made no recent updates to hardware or software. I searched Google and saw mention of it happening back in 2017. I'm afraid to run the project again fearing it will happen again.

Is this a Logic thing or a Project thing? Can anyone give me some insight on this anomaly?

Thanks

Never heard of that but there are a few things to try:

  • Run it with speakers off and taking a video screenshot - if it does it consistently at the same place it my give you a cue for troubleshooting.
  • Analyse all of your automation, event lists MIDI CC for every track for something that may have got nudged.
The level meter for the track was 700 and something.
I don't know where you get that, level meters only go from -∞ up to 0 then beyond that only up to +6

Thanks for the input. I had been playing over and over for about 1/2 hour and had not changed a thing when it happened. I have played it through about 3 times since and nothing.

Here is a blurb from another post in 2021.

"I am new to Logic / music production in general, and I have just read multiple threads about an infamous bug/glitch/whatever that can occur in Logic where there is a sudden blast of white noise, sometimes up to 700db."

Also, I did not mention that when this happened to me Logic audio froze and I could get no audio out even though the playhead was sill moving.

I wonder if the 760.9 dB equates to some digital maximum? Have to check that.

The weird thing is that it has happened before and seems to not be a very common occurrence.

I may contact Apple?

It's the maximum 32-bit floating point number. according to the discussion on the Apple forum you linked.

But as I said, I don't think that would have come out of your speakers, 120dB is supposed to be the threshold of when a human gets immediate damage to their ears.

Don't know if the maximum 32-bit floating point number thing is true or not.

If Logic spits out its maximum level into your audio interface, the level that comes out of your speakers will depend on what level the audio interface clips the signal and how high the power amp powering the speakers is turned up. I was monitoring pretty loud at that point trying to finalize a mix.
