Logic Studio apps Mainstage & Plug-In Presets/Settings

Hello, all -

Mainstage can access the library of saved Channel Strip Settings which is shared with Logic. However, is it also possible to access the library of plug-in presets? If so, please let me know the secret! Thank you...

Be in Edit Mode, select plug-in in channel strip, look at inspector. First tab is Plug-in Library....... Like Logic, the library only works on native, not 3rd party, plug-ins.

That did the trick, at least for Logic's native plugins...

Logic does actually allow one to save plugin presets for 3rd-party plugins. One can save those presets into the Library and browse them in the Library tab. Therefore, I had hoped that Mainstage would allow this also, but apparently not....Someone please correct me if they know how to do so!

:eeek: I never paid attention to that! I knew they could be saved, didn't realize they'd show up in the Library. I guess I should open the Library more often.

And you're right - MainStage doesn't seem to access that - not sure why.

I've just begun using all these Library features for organization, partly because I am beginning to use Mainstage, and find it very convenient that Channel Strips can be shared between the two apps. However, the inability to view third-party presets in Mainstage seems to be a bug or oversight. One can see those directories in Mainstage when selecting a 3rd-party plugin, but none of the presets are visible! Meanwhile, in Logic, this works fine.

The nomenclature and location of these various settings is also confusing:

For Logic's plugins, settings are called "Plug-In Settings" and appear here:

Library/Application Support/Logic/Plug-In Settings
~/Library/Application Support/Logic/Plug-In Settings

For 3rd-party plugins, the settings are called "Presets" and appear here:

Library/Audio/Presets
~/Library/Audio/Presets

Presumably the 3rd-party plugin preset files are stored in the general Audio area so that other applications can access them.

It's much faster and often more convenient to find presets via Logic (and Mainstage) Library, rather than through each plug-in's own internal and often idiosyncratic browser. Especially, some "vintage" emulation plug-ins go too in the name of authenticity, reproducing the awkward bank/patch button systems of old hardware. The Logic library allows one to organize presets as one wishes, by category, as favorites, etc. Also, one can even change presets without opening the plugin window!

P.S. My faulty memory can never keep track of all the Logic file locations, so I created a folder of aliases to the common file locations as follows. Others may find this approach useful!

Nice tips and links - thanks.

I do use the Library, but just in the habit of using it for native plug-ins. I may start changing my ideas here and go through the "save as" process for 3rd party plug-ins.
