Logic Pro 8 Metronome Click Only Audible with Midi Data

I am new to the forum and apologize if this has been addressed elsewhere. If so, I couldn't find it. I am using Logic 8 and an Apogee Duet. The metronome click worked fine for years and is now only audible when there is midi data. On the transport bar, there is midi data in but no out. I have klopfgeist checked and in the environment and mixer windows I see the click track meter moving but can't hear the metronome clicks. It doesn't mater if the metronome icon is lit or not. It's the same in play or record mode, when I play a midi note the metronome sounds but as soon as I stop the click becomes inaudible again even through I can see the click meter moving. Any would be would be greatly appreciated.
