Mic Choice

Hi All,

Looking for comments and feedback here.... I am considering purchasing a tube mic. I've never owned one before. I have narrowed my search down to two models. I'd welcome any feedback or opinions people have to offer on them, or other models as well of course. These two choices aren't written in stone.

This will primarily be used as a voice over and vocal mic for both male and female voices/vocalists. My preamp is nothing special. Currently it is a Focusrite Octapre LE. I also have a Presonus MP-20. The two models are:

I own neither, but FWIW I have heard nothing but good things about the Mojave MA-200, and in fact I'm considering the MA-300 for my project studio: http://mojaveaudio.com/MA-300.html It's a bit of a stretch for me, but it might be worth saving up for.

Plus, the extra polar patterns give you some tonal options. I've only heard the Mojave 200i fet mike and was quite impressed by it. Like anything you really just have to buy it and try it in your studio. Good luck.

Eli, if you're doing VO recording, I highly recommend using a good solid state microphone. The goal for VO is to have clarity and accuracy, not to have the additional "warmth" and coloration people seek from tube mics.

Remember clients want the sound they no doubt auditioned their VO artists to get.

This is different from singers, who often want a "vibe" from a mic. In other words, horses for courses.

I've worked as a consultant to a large audio post facility for a long time, but often bring my compositions to other facilities for post. Popular VO mics include the Neumann U89i (and at a lower price point the TLM103), the AKG 414, the Blue Mouse, the EV RE-20, etc.
 
FTR, I bought the Lauten audio Horizon mic, and love it. Does it color the sound? Yes, it does. But for my personal workflow it colors it in a way that doesn't require as much corrective EQ after the fact. It sounds, without being EQ'd, the way I try and get my other mics to sound after I correct them with EQ. So, for my aesthetic sensibilities, this mic makes sense. I have been usign it for about two months now and really do like it.

I tried it on trumpet and did not like it for that - at all - but that's not what it's meant for. For voice and vocalists ti works great for me.
