I installed ML over my 10.7.4 CCC backup on an ext hd connected to my 2010 i5 MBP. It's still very early, but, so far...nothing jumps out as a problem.

Such is the beautify of spare drives and partitions.


Having said that, there doesn't seem to be any real need to upgrade on one's main system at this time.

Hopefully others will post there impression here.
 
I went ahead and installed it on my i5 MBP which is what I use the most.
After (too) much deliberation, I decided not to do my usual backup/erase/clean install.

No issues to report.
 
Logic with Prism Sound Orpheus driver not recognised since installing Mountain Lion

Hi..since installing Mountain Lion Logic does not see the Orpheus driver and I can't even access internal sound. I cannot access "sound" in System Preferences and iTunes, uTube etc don't work

Anyone else had problems with Prism sound cards and ML or have a solution?

I've just read this on the Orpheus site...

Have you contacted the maker of your Orpheus Prism sound card about ML compatibility? (I've never used one, but the Orpheus looks mighty impressive!!!)

The Apogee Ensemble (with it's tight integration with Logic) was not operational last summer when Lion (OSX 10.7) was released. Apogee was ready for ML this time around.

It's critical to have a backup e.g. Time Machine, Carbon Copy Cloner, or SuperDuper in order to restore your system is something goes wrong.

Another option as mentioned at the beginning of this thread is to test major software upgrades on a spare hard drive partition, or external hd. In my case it was my CCC backup on an ext hd. I installed ML on my main system only after testing software and hardware functionality with ML on the ext hd.

Post back when you've worked through this, for the benefit of others.
 
ML and Prism Sound Orpheus. update.

Prism sound are looking into the ML Orpheus conflict that I have. There was no problem updating to Lion and I did not expect this.

I also have a Euphonix Control surface which may muddy the waters as it can (apparently) control volume. A feature I have never managed to get working.

Don't know why but in 64 bit mode Logic lists the Orpheus in audio preferences but can't find it -2 error... but in 32 bit mode Logic does not list any devices.

I have sent System report and the crash report when OSX system preferences crashed to Prism Sound and they are looking into it.

I'm a musician not very tekky so I'm in the dark in these situations but will keep you posted as best I can.

I completely understand musician vs tekky, but knowing how to set up a back up system is absolutely essential for anyone using a computer.

Just didn't think it was an issue at the time...I'd upgraded to Lion with no problems and did not consider that ML would not be compatible with Prism Sound equipment.

Maybe I'll have to go back to Lion in the meantime... and I don't know how to do that either!

I use super duper on my studio Mac (costs around $30 I think) and ccc on our iMac (works great and is free). I'm not religious about it as I'm running time machine, but, I make sure I do it prior to any update "just in case."

Backing up, restoring...
Study the information below, then outline a backup and restore strategy for yourself.

Get at least one, but preferably two external hard drives. Purchase SuperDuper or CCC, then back up your current ML system to an ext hd.

I know this seems like a lot to get a handle on. But it's manageable. Read, take notes, practice!

Having said that, many users wait for months until there are clear signs that critical hardware/software is compatible before upgrading. Sometimes this is imposed by the maker as in the case of ProTools. Waiting...is a valid optional upgrade strategy.

I contacted Apple support telephone support and after about half an hour or more it is likely that my install of ML is faulty. Many options were considered.

I've decided to put a new system drive into the Mac Pro. Load Snow Leopard from the DVD', update it to the latest version, and then install ML on this new disk. I can use the migration assistant to bring in Logic etc. This will give me a clean install without affecting anything else. Does that make sense?

The new drive and migration plan makes good sense. :thmbup:

But it still leaves me wondering about ML compatibility with you high-end interface. Has PS indicated that their software drivers are compatible with ML?

Since you're putting in a new system drive, what do you plan to do with the previous system drive?

Once your new system is all set, you could put it in an external case like this:

Hook it up to your Mac Pro, erase it using the Applications>Utiltiles>Disk Utility on your new system drive, then use it as your back up drive using one of the previously mentioned approaches.

After just replacing my startup drive with a SSD (which I highly recommend btw) this is what I did. But, I found that I can also put a drive in my 2nd optical drive bay using an adapter kit from owc which I ordered. The FireWire drive is working fine so I may not bother at this time.

I can't really say whether ML is compatible with Orpheus until I have re-installed ML. I understand that Prism sound have not tested it as yet. If I find anything useful for anyone else I'll post it. Is anyone out there using ML with Orpheus.

M.L. is working fine on my MacBook Pro but without any Prism Sound or Euphonics drivers installed. I don't dare try it out on my laptop in case I lose that!

Once I have a working operating system I can use the old system drive for backup etc. There are 4 internal bays in the Mac Pro and having an extra disk space will be really useful.
 
I have a question. i am new to the group. I upgraded to mountain lion.
and I am have one problem with Logic 9. when I go into play or record mode the computer (or I should say Logic) gets stuck. When I hit the keyboard spacebar to stop the play or record it may play for a minute longer before it stops. I can't adjust the volume or do anything else until it stops. This is a real pain during a session. Has anyone experienced this problem?
 
Macbook to Macbook Migration problems

I went from my old Macbook 13" with Mac OS X 5.0.8 to a new Macbook Pro 15" with ML all ready on it using Migration Assistant thet the new computer encouraged me to use. After 4days of waiting for this process to complete, Logic can not find several of the software sounds my songs had used when they were created in Logic on my old Macbook.

Other then that, Logic seems to be working fine (though I'd hoped I have more CPUs to work with, but that didn't seem to change).

I have several gripes about Mountain Lion, but I'll take those to another forum.

P.S. When I attach an external hard drive with some old info saved on it, I'm able to search that to get the sounds I seem to be missing, but I don't want to have to always hook up an external hard drive where ever I go to produce music with my portable Macbook recording unit. I don't feel like I should be having to do this, nor should I have to go through everything on that hard drive to find and transfer what I need - 'not really sure how to in the first place. Knowledgeable feedback welcomed & appreciated. Thank you.

Can you be more specific about what types of sounds you're missing?
 
I'll try & be more specific: When I open a project in Logic (one I had already created in Logic on the Lion OS) with this new Mountain Lion OS (which was on the new MacBook Pro I switched over to with the Migration Assistant), it either opens with no problem (usually a project with very few MIDI instrument tracks being used) or (usually a project with more then just a few MIDI track instruments being used) I have to search for one or more of those MIDI instruments.

To answer your question, I just opened one project I have with several MIDI instruments being used, and Logic can't find "ESX24 (Cavern Kit)", and couldn't find a ".wav" file. I opened another project to give another example and it can't find "EXS24 (Liverpool Bass)", "EXS24 (Heavenly Chords)", an ".aif" file, a few ".wav" files (including one in the form of an email address, which I've NEVER seen show up before), and "EXS24 (Finger Nylon)".

Now, as I'm writing this, I see maybe they're all EXS24, but not sure yet, and not sure that would be, anyway. Any clues?
 
So Migration Assistant did all of the heavy lifting? No fresh install of Logic?

On you system running Lion, Logic had no trouble finding instruments?

Sounds like the missing instruments and samples are located here on your previous system:
Mac Hard Drive>Library>Application Support>Garage Band>Instrument Library>Sampler (which contains Sampler Files and Sampler Instruments).
The Cavern Kit, Heavenly Chords should all be in there. See the attachment.

If they're all present on your previous system and but some are missing on your new system, then I would drag the entire Sampler folder on to an external hard drive, then hook it up to your new system, and drag the Sampler Folder into the Instrument Library to replace what's there.

If you've read this thread in it's entirety then you know what a recommended best practice pattern should consist of:

1. Having an external hard drive for backups via SuperDuper, CCC, or Time Machine.
2. Consider my reply here: https://logic-users-group.com/forums/threads/question-about-backup.6956/ I just completed a clean install of Mountain Lion and all apps on new internal drives in my MBP. Tedious, but followed my own advice, ending up with a smooth running system.
3. A clean install is a better option than Migration Assistant. At this point, you now know how Migration Assistant works.
