Logic Pro 9 Multi cycle record problem

esteso

Logician
I've got Logic set up to cycle record and I've got "create take folders" selected. The 1st channel of the instrument (Kontakt in this case) will not play back the data that's recorded on that track. The midi is there, I can see it but I can't hear it.

I can record into the 2nd or 3rd channel of the same instrument, no problem. But not the 1st midi channel. I've tried different instruments with the same result. I could create tracks in cycle record but this is not what I want because the naming convention become very clunky with a large template. (they are all named Inst. 1 for instance, even if you rename it Taiko)

I've tried auto punch with the same results. I've tried disabling Cycle, disabling record enable on the track in question but none of that makes a difference. I've tried it in a brand new project with the same result so I'm at a loss. This all works fine when using a single (non multi) instrument

Any thoughts?

Is it possible that the problem is within Kontakt? Maybe you don't have an instrument assigned to MIDI channel 1 within Kontakt itself? It's unlikely, but worth checking.

Also, make sure the MIDI channel value on your channel strip is set to "all". I am assuming you are using Kontakt multi timbrally.

Well it seems I've fixed it>> but I'm not really sure why. I think there's a lot I don't understand about how these things work is what it really comes down to.

At any rate, what I did was fool around with the midi settings in a standalone version of Kontakt. I'm not sure whats different now than when I started. All the settings appear the same back in Logic so who knows?

But it is fixed and that's the important thing.

Thanks,

Oh well. it worked two hours ago, but now it's back on a different midi channel. That's it, I give up. My conclusion: midi take folders just don't work. I suppose it could be Kontakt which is where I did all of my tests. But Kontakt is what I need, so I'll just have to change my workflow in order to get anything done.

I could be wrong, but I think there was just a discussion about something like this the other day and the conclusion was that take folders were for audio tracks only, not MIDI...

Because they do partially somewhat work for MIDI. They are useful as "containers" for storing and selecting between various MIDI takes. Where they fall short with MIDI is the limitations (ie: absence) of any significant editing functions.

Right. But as I've found they don't actually work consistently. So they're not even good for their conceived limited functionality. If the audio winks in and out for no apparent reason then I would say they are broken. (and probably should be removed or fixed)

At any rate, no need to belabor this point. I've moved on to independent tracks. Works much better.

It seems to me that one of the primary obstacles to dealing with MIDI in take folders as we do audio, is how to deal with splitting notes in the middle of their durations. What would happen if you "quick swiped" part of a note, but not all of it? In the Arrange Window, we are asked if we want to split the note, extend it, shorten, etc. How would that work in the take folder scenario?

What about controller events? Let's say there is a note being held down with the sustain pedal (CC 64) and we wanted to quick swipe only part of it? I think these are some of the fundamental problems of why it can't work the same way as audio.

Arm chair programmer mode: now off......

I had a chance to talk to some Logic guys about this and that was their statement. MIDI has "upstream" issues that just don't exist in audio, making it a more complicated process for the comping 🙁

It might come around at some point - it would be a great feature.
