PROBLEM FIXED - 99 views of my post and no responses?
It was something really simple in the end, but when you are not used to a new interface, sometimes the smallest things can trip you up.......for some reason, the channel outputs for the multi instruments set automatically to 'CH 9-10', all I had to do was change this to 'Stereo Out' and the audio signal was as it should be - again, simple but got there in the end! doh!

Hi there and thanks in advance for any light you can shed on my issue. I have searched through many Apple/Logic forums but can't find anyone reporting on this particular issue. My hardware/software specs are at the bottom of this post.
In a nutshell, I have exactly followed a number of simple online video tutorials to explain how to set up this multi timbral feature and I'm not getting audio coming out properly (sometimes I get a very weak audio signal) when triggering samples with my MPK controller, Apple keyboard or within the plugin interface itself. I am getting this same issue on all multi capable plugins; I have tried NI Kontakt 5, Rob Papen Punch and Spectrasonics Omnisphere (all plugins are using latest updates), so I know this must be a Logic X issue (probably user error!) and not related to the plugins.
So here's the simple process I am following:
- Add new software instrument and click 'multi timbral' and then I choose '16 parts' (n.b. I have experimented with various different numbers of parts whilst trying to figure out this issue)
- This opens 16 instruments which all have the corresponding midi channels as expected (1-16)
- I then go to the first of the 16 tracks at the top of the list and configure it with the multi timbral AU of my choice (let's say Kontakt 5 for this example)
- Kontakt 5 opens up and I choose an instrument, I then play some notes on my MPK, Apple keyboard or within the plugin and I get no response; I notice the midi channel in the Kontakt instrument is set to '1', so I change this to 'omni' and the output levels in Kontakt appear to be responding normally, as do the 16 channels in Logic (all 16 channels are responding - I am aware that ultimately I would need to assign the outputs to each instrument within Kontakt as I go along), however, despite this, I only get an ultra feint and barely audible sound coming through my main monitor outputs. I have tried using different octaves to see if some weren't responding but it doesn't solve the problem. If I turn the channel up I can of course hear the instrument a little better, but then the outputs are clipping badly.
- I don't have these audio out problems when playing normal mono or stereo instances of these same (and all other) plugins, so I'm fairly certain it's not a hardware issue. One thing I have noticed and I'm not sure how it relates exactly, but when I get this feint noise, if I turn off Bus 2, the noise signal disappears completely.
As a workaround, I have been creating the multi instrument in one single track and then I open up the required number of extra channels via that single tracks aux function on the main mixer, I then assign those aux's to independent tracks above and route the multi instrument and assign the midi channels that way. The only trouble is the routing settings keep messing up so it is very temperamental and not very flexible.
I'm guessing there is a routing issue of sorts somewhere and am hoping this is just me being uneducated in the ways of Logic, I have only in the last few weeks changed from Ableton Live 8 and much prefer Logic for my workflow.
I would be highly grateful for any insight that can be given.
I believe that I've covered all the relevant detail I can at this stage, but if you need further info please let me know.
