Logic Pro 9 Muting a section of a quick swipe comp

This is probably a(nother) dumb question from yours truly, but I can't seem to figure it out!

I'm doing some quick swipe comping with some recorded audio takes. I'm wondering how to quickly select a section where I want silence: none of the takes are suitable in that 4-bar section. The logical (small "L") part of me just wants to select that section, press "m" to mute it, but I can't seem to do that. I know that I can use the scissors tool to chop the offending section out of the whole comp region, but that seems clumsy to me, especially if I want to experiment with the exact point where it gets silenced.

Can someone put me out of my stupidity?

I'm not at my machine right now but I don't think you can do that. A workaround would be to have a blank/silent track that you can select on such occasions.
Then again I'm not perfectly sure.....

What you can do is use the shift key while you are in quick swipe mode. This will allow you to trim the selection boundaries without including takes from other comp folder lanes.

So, while this doesn't exactly "mute" the area you want, it will create silence there. Which is effectively the same thing (IMHO) for this type of situation. I do it all the time to omit open areas between phrases, etc.

Thank you for this. That's what I have been doing.

What is the best way to mute an inner part of a take?
That is, part within the take that does not touch the selection boundaries.

I have found two approaches, neither particularly elegant:
1. Select (with Marquee tool) the desired time range to be muted in a different take, then shift-click it there to mute.
2. Select (with Marquee tool) the desired time range in the take itself, hit the Mute shortcut key.

The latter approach makes more sense, but it creates "cuts" in the take just like the Mute command on regular regions, i.e. it splits as if the Scissors tool were also applied, not necessarily desirable.

Has anyone found a better way?
