Logic Pro 8 Need Mac Pro Model Advice

Sorry about another equip question > My G5 2x@,0 died and I'm not going to put the third mother board in. If you only had $2400 to spend and no chance of having more in the next year or so would you by a new 4 Core Nehalem with an 8gig 1066 ram limit or a first gen 8 core Xenon with 16 gig 667 ram limit? I do Run East West Play Orchestra and chorus etc with many tracks.

I just went through this myself, and I ordered the first-gen 8-core Xenon from the Apple Store refurb section. So far, I'm very happy with it. Would I have preferred to have the newer model? Sure, but at this point the Mac Pro I purchased is light years ahead of where I was.

Totally, totally happy and satisfied.

I also considered the 24" iMac but ultimately opted for the Mac Pro for drive space and number of processors. Having said that, the iMac is a strong option and a great performer.

Just to muddy the waters a little bit, apparently it's possible to bump up the 4 core to 16 gigs as it will work with 4 gig RAM sticks, at least according to Crucial Memory and others. I'm not sure it's officially sanctioned by Apple, and I understand the 4 gig sticks aint cheap.

And to spread cheap and ill-defined rumor, I was told by someone apparently far more in-the-know than I that Apple will be releasing a new nehalem chip in June, which isn't that far off. So if you need to buy ASAP, you might look at how real the 4 gig stick per slot deal is or look at last year's models. If you can wait, maybe see what June holds, if anything.

Final thought - anything you get will be screaming compared to your 2x2 tower - something I still use and am looking to replace this year (thus why I am so full of rumors and speculation. ;) )

I would assume the early 2008 4- and 8-core models are the same in terms of memory support. I ordered 8GB for my new 8-core from OWC as 2 4GB sticks, so we'll see what happens. OWC said it was supported, and I have to believe they are as plugged in as Crucial.

I'm interested in getting one of those too, but it looks as though the Apple Store is sold out. I've called a few physical locations near me (SF Bay Area) too, and they're sold out as well.

Do you mean the last two models? If so, they both have 4 pocessors. If you nean 8-core Xeon Mac it is the first model probably with max. 32GB RAM at 800 GHz.
By the way, the last two have an interesting comment in description of RAM Details
for Nehalem: *Apple officially supports a maximum of 8 GB of RAM but third-parties have been able to upgrade the system to 16 GB of RAM using four 4 GB memory modules...
for "original" it would be 32 GB by the same way.
I' ve bought the first model recently. The reasons were:
1. 8 is better than 4
2. 32 GB are better than 16 GB or 32 GB of third-parties RAM
