New Computer Recommendations for Logic 9

I've been stuck running Logic 8 on my decrepit G5 for a long time, but I'm finally on the verge of upgrading to an 8-core. What's the consensus on the most efficient and stable system setup? I've already heard recommendations to stick with Snow Leopard over Lion. Thoughts on that? And definitely 64 bit over 32 bit, regardless of OS? I do run a lot of third-party orchestral stuff, so RAM access and speed is critical. Thanks for any insight.

I use a lot of VSL and a number of NI plugins including Kontakt, as well as East-West Play libraries. I've been unable to use the EW Platinum Orchestra at all with the G5, and plan to use it more extensively on the new system. I.e., standard orchestration stuff.

1 system won't work very well if you are planning on using non SE versions of the VSL libs as well as Kontakt and Play. 2 or more is the standard these days, mainly due to the huge amounts of data required to stream them, regardless of the ram amounts involved.

One can build a more compact system if you are planning on going easy, but if you want to do "real full orchestration' type mockups, 2 or more systems is the only way.

Thanks, George, understood. Fortunately/unfortunately, I'm not in the rarefied atmosphere of the VSL Big Boys and use strictly the SE programs. Given the fact that I've been able to squeeze a fair amount of stuff out of them on my G5, I feel pretty good about some early euphoria working on any Mac Pro! Of course, I realize all honeymoons come to an end... But I'm still seeing a number of people recommending staying with Snow Leopard for the time being due to overall slower performance with Lion. Have you not found that to be the case?
