Logic Pro 9 Newbie saying hello and looking for advice

Hi everybody

I am an amateur musician and have been playing in brass bands here in the UK for 45 years (cornet & flugel). I have done a little recording over the years using borrowed equipment and have finally taken the plunge and bought myself my first ever Mac.

My system is a MacBook Pro - 3.0Ghz processor with 8 gig of ram. I got a good deal on Logic studio and have also invested in a midi keyboard (Akai) and a usb mike (AKG 120) .... and now I need to learn how to use the software before I spend any more money on gear. I figured that the kit I have should allow me to get to grips with the software and give me a start into making my own music.

I have bought a couple of books to help me through the learning process but I find myself having to google the terms used.

What books / web sites would you recommend for an absolute newbie to get to a stage where the manuals and tutor books actually start to make sense ?

Also - any other users out there involved in brass band music ? I would love to hear from you !

Thanks in advance 🙂

Lots of good stuff out there. I would start with the video's on Groove3 website. Eli's got a great starter "Logic 9" explained. There are other goods one there as well. A great book is Logic Pro POWER.

I haven't seen any bad training for Logic. I just think these are a great place to begin. 🙂

There are also a lot of tutorials on YouTube of various quality, I suggest SF Logic Ninja.

I recently got a subscription to the Groove 3 site.

It also has tutorials on midi, production and mixing.

Thanks .... I should have thought about checking YouTube out ..... there's quite a lot of stuff on there.
Looks like I'm going to be fairly busy over the next few months 😉

Welcome Brassnut.

Did you buy the Mac at an Apple Store? If so you should be able to sign up for a year of unlimited one on one tutorials for abot £75 or something ridiculous. I did this for Final Cut pro and it was all I needed to then get to grips with the manual and the terminology.

Hi Pete - I didn't go to a store to buy it .... I ordered it over the phone. Our nearest store is quite a trek unfortunately. That sounds like a great deal though - I will certainly look into it.
The problem I have is that the manuals and books I have looked at assume more knowledge about stuff than I have ..... I need something a bit more basic to get me to the stage where I understand all the terms and concepts they use.
Thanks for your reply !

OK, well I haven't actually seen these, but there are a couple of "for dummies" books (I usually like this series: I have Macs for Dummies)

Composing Digital Music for Dummies

Home Recording for Dummies
