Logic Pro 9 NI/Kontakt Memory Server on or off with 64-bit Logic 9?

I am migrating from Digital Performer, so I'm not sure how to handle this.

DP is not yet 64-bit, and so to relieve the memory woes, many users of that DAW use VEPro to open up their RAM. I have noticed that conventional wisdom is that if you are using VEPro, you should turn Kontakt's Memory Server "off."

When running Kontakt inside Logic Pro 9 in 64-bit mode, is it better to turn the Memory Server off, or do you still get the benefit by leaving it on?

Turn it off. Logic has all the ram you need! Also, I'm running single instances of Kontact and Play as Logic distributes the CPU load more evenly across the cores. Check it out.

Dave, when you say "single instances of Kontakt," do you mean opening one VI and running multiple instrument within that VI? Or do to mean running individual iterations of Kntakt for each instrument?

Individual, unless it's a multi that needs to layer. But, all up to you. I just like it now as I can eq and use bus fx plus bunch to disk or freeze individual midi tracks easily. Logic doesn't handle multitimbral VIs the same as DP where you easily have midi volume and pan control. It's doable but takes some setting up in the environment (which I used to do as I wanted things like DP). Or, people use multi outs and mix that way. At this point I'll use single instances wherever I can except for maybe Spectrasonics stuff or ethno. Have fun.

That's how I do it now in DP... individual instances for different instruments, for the most part (I mix on a digital console and just prefer to have the drum kit on a stereo pair, the strings on another, etc). Logic seems to be demonstrating better CPU handling of VIs than DP does.
