Logic Pro 7 & earlier No sound options at Input slot

Just getting back to using Logic 7 after more than a year. MacBook Pro, 10.5.8.
Trying to link to EFM1 synth, etc. When I click/hold on Input slot, instead of getting the hierarchical menu, the only options I get are "Input 1", "Input 2". or "No Input." Dead end.
Any thoughts?

Sounds like you are attempting to instantiate a software instrument on an audio track. You need to use a software instrument track. In Logic 7 language, that would be called an "audio instrument".
