percussion controller

I'm a keyboard player and would like to have a percussion controller. I live outside the city and there aren't any friendly percussionists hereabouts so I'd like to experiment on my own.

Can anyone tell me what instrument Thomas Dyani is playing here? It looks very like a Roland HPD-15 but not quite 🙂

He has raised thingies on the 15 small pads around the top segment of the pad, and there's a cutout in the frame around the top right assembly. Neither of these features appears in all the images I've found online. My guess is that it's either a custom job or a prototype.

Can anyone shed light on this?

If I'm not too late, it is indeed an HPD15, but I think he has maybe got some stickers on the top 10 pads. You get a set of stickers to use when labelling up the notes for playing tuned percussion. It could just be something like that, although it's hard to tell, so I cant be sure!

It is a greaet instrument though, although tricky to get the hang of straight away until you've figured out the best way to play each programme.

thanks Nipperooney 🙂 He might also have added rubber stickons to the pads to help his fingers, or beaters. Any Idea about the cutout? Or am I imagining it?

I can't see a cut out on the video. Is it the right side ribbon controller you're looking at?

looking here: http://goo.gl/9WdxP
above the RH ribbon controller there are buttons/LEDS then more buttons a a sort of dial, all apparently flush with the surface.
On Thomas's machine (opening frame) it looks different in that area. Maybe it's just the effect of stage lighting?

If you pause the video at 43" when he lifts his left hand off the drum, you can see that the sticky things on the pad are not all the same size and shape, which leads me to believe that he's stuck them on himself rather than them being something Roland would have done. As for the top right, when I look at mine and look at his, they look the same, apart from the colours seem slightly lighter on his, but that could be due to the lighting as you've already said.
