Logic Pro 8 piano-roll record mode - dissappearing notes!

Hi,
Can somebody please let me know of a way to change logic's settings so that previously recorded notes in the piano-roll (matrix editor) window do not dissappear as soon as you go into record mode. This has irritated me for so long now - I can't find a valid reason for not being able to see the context of previously recorded notes when you are adding notes in a new take.

Using logic studio 8 on G5 Quad and Tiger.

Do you have the link mode the catch clock position off? You may also need to disable the automatic catch clock settings in the prefs.
