Great. This is how I'm creating a track for my Korg in MIDI.

I'm selecting Ext MIDI. Use External instrument is ticked.
Input is 3 + 4 (this is the audio input I'm using as I have the korg connected by stereo audio)
Output is New ext device - 1 ( midi channel 1)
Ascending is ticked
Output is 1 + 2

I'm at work in an hours time but I will be able to look at your findings tonight.

Thanks. :)

I've ticked controller data in midi monitor and there is data showing but I'm not sure what it is I'm looking at or for?
These MIDI Monitor data look familiar.
I see a very similar output here when Logic runs (record or not):
14:54:55.950 To Midi Out 4 Control 1 Sustenuto Pedal 50
14:54:55.950 To Midi Out 4 Control 1 Portamento On/Off 48
14:54:55.950 To Midi Out 4 Control 1 Hold Pedal 55
14:54:55.955 To Midi Out 4 Control 1 Soft Pedal 51
14:54:55.955 To Midi Out 4 Control 1 Sustenuto Pedal 32
14:54:55.955 To Midi Out 4 Control 1 Portamento On/Off 49
14:54:55.988 To Midi Out 4 Control 1 Portamento On/Off 54
14:54:55.988 To Midi Out 4 Control 1 Hold Pedal 51
14:54:56.054 To Midi Out 4 Control 1 Sustenuto Pedal 49
14:54:56.055 To Midi Out 4 Control 1 Portamento On/Off 49
14:54:56.055 To Midi Out 4 Control 1 Hold Pedal 50
14:54:56.055 To Midi Out 4 Control 1 Portamento On/Off 54
14:54:56.088 To Midi Out 4 Control 1 Sustenuto Pedal 50
14:54:56.089 To Midi Out 4 Control 1 Portamento On/Off 48
14:54:56.089 To Midi Out 4 Control 1 Hold Pedal 55
14:54:56.153 To Midi Out 4 Control 1 Portamento On/Off 49

These data are going from Logic to a Mackie Control and I think they control the transport display of the unit.

Do you have a control surface installed in your Control Surface setup?
Menu: Logic Pro > Control Surfaces > Setup
If yes and you do not need it, delete it.

If you need the control surface, rethink your MIDI routing. According to your MIDI Monitor Logic sends the same data to "Port 1" and to port "MIDI". Control surface data should never go to the playing part of a hardware instrument because it contains CC, Channel Pressure, Pitchbend and Notes.

I hope we found the gremlins ...

I think it's fixed. I deleted all the control surfaces i had in logic, Makkie mixer (even though I've never owned one) and a recording light and now its recording and playing back with zero background noise. I'm hoping this is the problem solved. :) I have to go to work now, I'm running late as it is. If this is fixed I owe you all a cold beer :) I will be in touch later.

Yes thanks Peter, and everyone else. You have all made my day. If you guys ever come to London, send me a message and I'll hook up with ya and buy the beers.
Thanks again.
