Logic Pro Plugins and signal path

I notice that even though some plugins are disabled, they add latency.

Why does this happen, and does it have any effect on the signal level?

I would assume the reason is so you can A/B the plugin (in or out of the signal path) without getting a glitch from a timing change from the latency change.

Does it affect level? Shouldn't but that's easy to check if you bounce and compare the files with and without the plugin invoked.

the latency part of my post concerns the fact that I often put plugins in my output channel, and when I overdub these cause latency, which turning these off doesn't remove. I have to reset the channel strip. I assume that Logic implements latency correction so that all audio channels remain in sync with each other - my question is really about levels, and if the only way to test this is to record different states, I'm up for that, but thought that asking here is easier 🙂
