Logic Pro 9 Problems in violin track

I've excerpted the track but don't know how to send it.

It is a track replete with pitch bends and, for no reason at all, certain notes come out staccato but look full-length in the piano roll. I also see no problem with the expression controller.

Also, at the beginning, there is an apparent trill where I haven't put any. I've checked the EXS24 window and I don't see what I might have done wrong.

If these are Jam Pack instruments you are using, it is entirely possible that they are mapped to change articulations with different modulation amounts - and possibly you accidentally entered some modulation information at the same time as the pitch bend (if you are using a joy stick of some sort).

Or maybe they are programmed to switch articulation by velocity and that is what is causing the change in articulations being triggered. Anyway - just some ideas to try and point you in what hopefully will be the right direction in trying to sleuth this out 😀

Thanks Eli,

None of these are Jam Pack instruments especially the track in question which is, as stated, an EXS24 violin sample.

Enclosed is a jpg of the EXS24 window.

The url of that except is:

Hi Ed,

That is from one of the Jam Pack libraries. And it does, by default, use modulation wheel routing to switch between articulations. Check in your event list and see if there are any modulation events in there (CC 1).

Yes Eli,

You are right! Eliminating the modulation events eliminates the problem. I can still use the mod delay plug-in and it doesn't seem to bother the articulation.

I'm surprised you write that it's a Jam Pack instrument though.

I'm even more surprised that I seem to have imported the combined midifile which I don't recall I even did, of the whole Elgar Violin Concerto and this may save me a lot of work in the long run.

Thanks,

Ed

Hi Ed,

It's a Jam Pack instrument in that it originates from the Jam Pack called "Symphony Orchestra".

You can (relatively) easily disable the mod wheel articulation switching from within the EXS 24 Edit window. Go into the "Groups" view and make sure the local View menu is set to "view all" so that you will see all the available parameters. In the "select group by" fields you can reset the "type" parameter to "none" instead of the control message it is currently set to by click holding and choosing the -- parameter. Don't forget to save the instrument hen you have made the changes you want.

Hi Eli,

Actually, I got rid of the mod wheel activity by opening the list view, choosing one modulation event, selecting similar events and then pressing delete but I did investigate what you mentioned about the groups view.

But the 2 files I'm working on which involve solo strings are not yet satisfactory by a long shot and will involve, I think, extensive editing. (These are my sequences of the Elgar Enigma Variations as well as his Violin Concerto.)

And the other thing which I've included in another thread involves changing samples on a single track and I haven't gotten an answer to this yet. I will repeat the question on that thread but since you mention that I'm dealing with Jam Pack instruments I should be able to do this, right?

Actually, no. The idea of changing patches mid track is an old school outboard hardware MIDI paradigm that isn't really used much these days in DAWs like Logic. Logic's internal instruments don't respond to patch changes. There si a way to do it using "performances" found under the channel strip settings field. But this is meant more for live performance than for sequencing.

Just set up multiple instruments on different tracks, split your region, and place the relevant parts on each track.

Or alternatively, you could set up a key switching kind of solution, but this requires a bit of fiddling in the Environment. Or you could use a channel splitter as a track instrument, that is sent to multiple instruments each set to different MIDI channels, and then assign the notes within the region to the proper channel that corresponds to the instruments you want them to trigger.

I sorta see what you mean and, yes, Harmony Assistant works in the modern sense of splitting the instruments into separate tracks as well.

I think what the idea is is that you can crop both of the regions and place them both on the same track.

I think I'll try it with a dummy file at first.

Thanks, Eli.

BTW: I plan to write a summary of my Logic experiences for my website as a companion to my old MIDI sequencing essay but I want to see about this subject first.
