Logic Pro problems (noise) when using external instruments

Hi everyone

I want to use my synth (an DSI polyevolver) as an external instrument in logic. I have already connected it via MIDI and Audio-cables to the audio/midi-interface. When I open logic and create an external midi instrument and play something WITHOUT recording it, it all sounds nicely. However, as soon as I hit the record-button, the sound that I hear (I have my headphones also connected to the audio-interface) is kind of strange. It makes very strange noise and doesn't really sound the way it did before. When I then stop recording and hit the play-button to hear what I've recorded, it again sounds normal as it should... It seems that it records it properly. I just can't really hear what I'm playing during the recording. This makes it quite difficult to work...
Does anyone has a suggestion what to do?

As it happens, I used to use my DSI Prophet 08 (anyone want to buy me a Prophet 12 module? 😉 ) as an external instrument all the time. It sounds like you have everything connected properly if you can monitor and record with your PEK sounding normal.

The best piece of advice I can give you is to not attempt to monitor through Logic when you are recording. In other words, you want to configure your audio interface for "direct monitoring" or "hardware monitoring"-whatever your interface calls it. What that means is that the signal from your synth will be routed to BOTH Logic and your physical speakers at the same time. Then make sure that Software Monitoring in Logic is turned OFF. With this, you should hear your synth exactly how it sounds in real time when recording.

Hi there,

You say it sounds strange and then later you say you can't really hear it when you are recording.

I'm not sure about the sounding strange part, but maybe try toggling the auto input monitoring. This will effect hearing it during recording. I suspect it may not be the solution, but it's simple enough to try.

Thank you for the advice. I tried both, but unfortunately it didn't work out. For clarification: I can hear what I play, but it is not the sound the synthesizer makes normally by choosing a specific program on the synthesizer (e.g. an organ sound). It's more like a noisy, distorted sound, which doesn't sound like the original one. It must be a problem with the MIDI, because it all works fine when I just connect it via Audio. The Audio/Midi-Interface (an alesis io 2) shows a red bulb on it's midi "Midi In" display. All the other displays show green bulbs. Also, sometimes when I create a new External-Instrument track in Logic and play a note on the external synthesizer, it begins with this strange sound and then gets louder and louder and noisier and noisier, so that I have to switch off the synthesizer or choose another program and then go back to the original program, to make it stop.
However, as soon as I stopped recording something and hit the play-button to hear what I've recorded, it again sounds all normal as it should and not the noisy way it sounded in my headphones during I was recording it. Therefore it can't be a Midi-Out problem, right? Otherwise there should also be a problem as well when I hit the play-button to hear what I've recorded...

It seems as if there is a problem with the settings in logic concerning the communication from the computer to the synthesizer. something with the midi-out of the interface to the midi-in of the synthesizer
