Logic Pro 9 Punching in on take folder doesn't always work

This seems to happen to me quite a bit so since it just now happened (again) I thought I'd post this picture. Sometimes when punching in on a track where I'm recording in a take folder Logic decides to not put the new audio file in the take folder. You can see by the screenshot what I'm talking about. I'm assuming this happens to everybody and it's just another "take folder quirk" that one has to live with. It seems to behave better if I punch in earlier in the track, but, the closer to the end of the folder I punch in at, the more likely this situation appears.

I love responding to my own threads ;-) So, I just figured out a poor man's work around, which I'm sure the experts here already know and then made a video tutorial of how to do it. I realize there are a few other ways to do this but here is one way to go.

Thank you for posting the solution I've been looking for.😉

Very nice web site! Your studio looks high class all the way.

Hi Dave,

Nice video, and nice tip! I have noticed that this happens when punching in towards the end of a take folder also. My theory is that it may have something to do with Logic rounding to the bar. Even though Logic doesn't do this with audio, it only does it with MIDI, my hypothesis is that this behavior is somehow at work when punching in on tracks with take folders.

Thanks guys (and Eli, who I greatly respect in the tutorial dept!). I'm glad it's not just me that this happens to. I honestly didn't think there was a work around until I tried it myself. Looking forward to Logic 10 fixing some of these weird things.

While this is fresh on my nerdy brain, I just punched in on a first take audio track "pre take folder" and, instead of automatically making a take folder after the punch it did the same weird layering thing with the new audio file slightly on top of the first one. Once again, probably because I punched in close to the end. This time I selected both audio files and chose the "pack take folder" command just so I could get a folder actually instantiated. Ugh...

Hi Dave,

I've been exploring this a bit as well and came up with a slightly simpler workaround to the original scenario. While it's true you can simply choose "pack take folder" with two regions like you just described, you can't do it in the case of an audio file and an already existing take folder.

So, in your original scenario of a separate audio region resulting from a punch in towards the end of a take folder, here's an easier workaround:

1. Drag the audio region temporarily to an adjacent empty track.

2. Extend the right edge of the take folder.

3. Drag the audio region back over the take folder, and it will be merged with it automatically.

It's slightly simpler than your original idea, which involved moving the region in the time line and switching to the take Folder's edit mode.

Thanks Eli. I actually did it this way first but for some reason thought making a new track annoying and cumbersome so discovered the 2nd way. I should have taken more care and showed both ways but I wanted to move on and finish writing this cue! At least we now know there's a way to fix it and get back to business!
