Logic Pro Random Channel Strip Config Changes

Jay Denson

Logician
I keep getting random changes in my channel strip configuration. I lose my channel numbers, for example, and I gain EQ thumbnails (ingrowing toenails?) or I gain the icon.

Any ideas anyone?

TIA Jay

Is it possible you are switching screen sets? And maybe have the mixer configured differently in some if them?

Check the little number in the menu bar at the top of the screen. You can change between them using the numbers on your QWERTY keyboard. It sounds to me like you may have inadvertently switched to a screen set with altered view options. Screenset 1 is the default.

What Eli said
Plus:
Screensets have been one of the most powerful features in Logic for many years and lots of people don't use them.

Jay, try setting up different screen arrangements for example:
Use screenset 1 for your general work.
Use another screenset with a big Mixer or Environment window for mixing/checking plugins etc.
Use another screenset to have a piano roll window open that shows modwheel or other controller data below.
etc etc etc

Then instead of constantly opening and closing windows, just hit your number keys to instantly change your views of what's happening in Logic.

It will change your life....

Hi Eli and Colin

I don't see a little number - where exactly is it? I have been making templates with channels routed to auxes where I put my favourite reverbs, etc. That's not the same thing is it?

Just hit any number on your keyboard from 1 to 9 and Logic opens that screenset. To get more, hold [Control] and hit two numbers e.g. [Control] 1 + 1 = Screenset 11

You can also duplicate an existing screenset and work from there:
Down the Screenset menu, choose [Duplicate...]
You can also rename screensets to help remind you of their function.

Getting back to your original question, you can set screen sets to display unique customized configurations of channel strip components in the Mixer.

Like Colin says, just invoke a new screen set and configure the windows as you like and they are automatically saved with that screen set number.

Two caveats: these are project specific, not global to the program. So save them in your templates. And second, there are no double digit screen sets that incorporate the number zero. So it's 1-9, 11-19, 21-29, etc. I think this is because the number zero is normally reserved for transport functions.

Hi Eli,

Just for record, it is possible to create screensets with zero's (10, 20, 30 etc) by using the [Next screenset] key command. Logic will create these, but then you can't get to them in the usual way, by typing in numbers, though you can get to them by using the [Next screenset] key command. All in all, still good to avoid these as you recommended above. Just thought I'd mention this....

Interesting! I didn't know that - about accessing those screen sets by using the "next" command.

There is sort of a bug that has been in Logic for a long time. It may be in part triggered when you do a screen set switch but it isn't a case of switching to a different screen set that isn't the same as another one nor is it because you modified a locked screen set that then reverts to how it was before. I experienced it enough to have tried all the angles. What happens, is the audio environment mixer object (I think at one time they called them all instruments) that an arrange track is going out to suddenly flips or changes. I currently have an issue with trying to put the main stereo out into the arrange area and it disappearing. Again, I've made sure when I insert it there my screen set is unlocked etc but it disappears and it is always that main stereo output, not any other one. (Logic Pro X).

Hi Madelefant

There is some sort of bug. My random changes in channel strips config don't seem connected with screensets. I delete all screensets but the one I'm using anyway as I don't have a lot of use for them at the moment.

If you highlight the stereo bus in mixer and hit ctrl - T it will appear in the arrange window. If you do that does it disappear sometimes. I don 't know cos I haven't needed to automate the stereo bus yet although I'll use it when I need to automate a general fade out.
