Logic Pro 8 remote control of transport

I am trying to assign midi note numbers to transport controls via my drumkat, so I can hit a pedal to start song. I have a drumkat hooked into a MOTU Micro going into Logic, and I can play midi notes from it. I went into Preferences/Controllers/Learn Mode, then set the "zone" to transport, turned on the Learn Mode button and tapped my controller, and it received the message. However when I closed out the window and went to the song, when I hit the midi note, the transport does not respond. Instead, a musical note is triggered.

What have I missed in the attempt to trigger the controls with remote midi?

You should assign transport controls in the key commands windows, not in the controller assignments window.
Open the key commands window, locate the desired transport command in the Global section of key commands, and select the key command in the list. Then click the 'Learn new assignment' button in the lower right corner of the key commands window. Now you can play your MIDI note and Logic will assign it to the selected transport command.

Best...
