Logic Pro 9 RME & Logic midi problem

I recently purchased an RME Fireface UC to use with Logic 9.1.4. While the audio has given me no problems whatever, I'm experiencing stuck midi notes. I played a dummy piano part in which all notes are short in duration (see attachment). However, when I push stop on the Transport, one or two notes will often then "grow" to meet the next instance of that note. It's irritating, especially given that my cheapo Edirol UM-1 midi interface has never given me a moment's trouble.

I'm using a Yamaha S08 as a controller for Logic's VIs. I doubt the keyboard is the problem, though, since I've never had difficulties in the past and, again, there are no problems with the Edirol interface.

I know: "If it works just use the Edirol!" True, but this expensive box should be able to handle midi data, no?

I saw a suggestion somewhere to turn off "chase notes," but that had no effect.

So does anyone know why these notes "grow" after I hit stop?

I've seen this with a control surface connected to a USB port (Yamaha DM 2000 mixer)
It sends continuous sensing data, and Logic picks it up as controller and note data.
check those long notes that keep growing under the list menu to see if its a controller or other external piece of gear sending note data to Logic. Check the channel its transmitted on, that gave it away for me in my setup that my surface controller was shooting tons of data. I'll look at my rig when I'm in front of it, if I remember correctly I filtered out data from that USB ports' input so it wouldn't record it into a midi track.
Good Luck

Hey Gino

Thanks for the reply. I created a new region and went to the event list but I don't see anything in the list data like you suggest (see attachment). Just a long note which wasn't long when I actually played it. But perhaps you see something I don't.

The only other thing I notice is that the screen on the synth has "Midi data!" on its LED screen. I've never seen that before. Do you think that could indicate something being sent from the Yamaha to the RME box? Wouldn't it show up in the list data?

Thanks for any thoughts you might have.

Jim

In the Yahama manual it is explained that "!Midi Data" means "Error occurred when receiving MIDI data." Not too helpful, eh?

Seems like an odd message since I'm only using the keyboard to send midi data, not receive it.

Try looking in the control surfaces section of the preferences. Look in "Setup" and see if there are any devices there that shouldn't be, and delete them if necessary. It doesn't even hurt to delete the control surfaces you do have and then have Logic rebuild them when it starts up again. Also, use the "rebuild defaults" command under the prefs menu to initialize all the settings.

Jim,
just for giggles, can you record a midi track, without playing anything and see if any data gets recorded? if the answer is no, then record a midi track and play each note of your keyboard controller to see if you can always repeat that long E1 note. perhaps its a funky controller/key.
Let me know what you find out. This way you can determine if it is funky data coming into Logic from the keyboard, or if Logic is self generating this data due to a USB driver incompatibility.
Good Luck

Thank you Eli and Gio for your responses.

Eli--since I own no control surfaces, it wasn't a surprise that I found none in the preferences menu you suggested. So that street was a dead end.

Gio--A region containing only a starting and ending note (I don't know how to record an empty midi region since I've only seen them start when a key is pressed) produced no data other than those two notes, and their lengths were as I played them. I also played each key individually and got no stuck notes. But playing many keys rapidly then produced a stuck note, this one an F#. A later attempt generated a stuck note on a different key. Since none of this occurs when using my simple Edirol midi interface, I don't think that the controller's keys are to blame.

This is mighty irritating and it seems to me that is must be a problem with the RME box. That box created these odd note lengths, but the Edirol interface does not. The really odd thing, to me at least, is that if I draw a midi region and watch the notes appear while I play, all notes appear at the proper length. It's only when I hit "stop" that the rogue notes grow in length. Baffling--to me at least.

Should I just forget it and live with the RME box as is--since I like the audio end of it as well as the TotalMix software? I'd sure bum out if I sent the thing back and received a new one only to find the same thing happening.

Hmmm,
Yes it sounds like its an RME midi thing, if your Edirol works....
To be honest I use my RME Fireface 800 for audio I/O and not for midi. I get my midi in and out of my rig with a MOTU MTP-AV connected via USB to he MBP.
I do like the sound of the RME, and the routing.
If its not a huge thing, and the RME is doing what you want it to do, I'd say hang on to it,
and as Eli said, check for updated drivers, RME is pretty good about updating stuff as OS updates get cranked out for both PC and Mac.
Good luck

Thanks, Eli and Gio

Yeah, I'm up-to-date on the driver updates.

I'm going to move on and live with the midi through my Edirol box. But I'm going to badger RME's American dealer about this. It's an expensive box--for me, at least--and it should function properly. Still, time to move on.

Thanks again for your suggestions.

I just received this reply from a tech as RME:

"Is your Keyboard connected via USB to the computer, or via MIDI cables to the Fireface UC? I'm not sure why you would connect the devices in Audio/MIDI setup - all you should do is select the desired MIDI I/O and channel in your Logic MIDI track. Possibly, this may be causing some loop that would result in the "stuck" notes. Try removing these connections and only do the MIDI setup from within Logic.

The MIDI Out LEDs on your UC have no way to know that no device is connected. They light up when MIDI data is sent to the ports.

You can use MIDI Monitor from Snoize to check the note data received at the UC MIDI input or output."

Could any of you LUGers out there comment on the following points:

1. Should I not be using Audio/MIDI Setup? I have been since Logic 6 and have suffered no ill effects.

2. He suggests that I "select the desired MIDI I/O and channel" from within Logic. I know how to select that MIDI channel, though since I often use multi-channel instruments such as EVB3 and record only one track at a time I generally just set the channel to "All". How, though do I "select the desired MIDI I/O"? The Fireface UC has MIDI in/out 1 and 2. I'm only using 1. Is there a setting in Logic where I would tell Logic to only pay attention to 1 and to ignore 2?

I'll try the Snoize MIDI monitor. It can't hurt.
Thanks,

Jim

On second thought...

Further to my previous post, I'm aware that you can choose the MIDI port when playing a sound through the synth, but not when playing a VI and using the keyboard merely as a controller, right?

* * * * * *

Hey, you know what? On second thought, I'll just use my little Edirol UM-1 midi interface for midi, which has never given me a moment's trouble, and the Fireface UC for audio. Fewer headaches, more music.

Thanks to all who tried to help.
