what is the proper way to set up a mic for singing? I have mine just standing straight and normal but i been watching videos and alot of people have there mics like leaned towards them.

then others have these upside down mics that are tilted towards the artist.

can someone please give me some guidance on the proper way to do things? Or post a link to some kind of guidance or something?

thanks a ton!

i used to think it was more important to get a preamp before upgrading to a better mic but lately people been telling me to get a better mic first. what do u guys think?

thx

The height position of the mic is important. The more up towards the nose makes the sound deeper. The more down towards the chin and throat makes the sound brighter. The vertical position is your equalizer.

The side position is important. All singers have their preferred side where they sing out when they get emotional. Find the better side by looking how they smile, laugh, let them make funny faces and find out to which side the mouth goes. This is your side.

The distance is important. Find the best distance. And the singer should not sing straight into the mic from a short distance, this will bring out the plosives and enhance the esssssses. If necessary use a good pop filter.

Upside down or not is not important. A mic has no feeling for that. This is rather a practical matter and depends on the mic stand or how the photographer wants the picture. However, if a mic hangs high and top down, it forces the singer to straighten his throat. If you want that and high is the best position, hang the mic high and top down.

It is equally important. Finally there should be at least one good mic and one good preamp.
