Logic Pro Should I upgrade to Logic X?

Hi,

I'm working with Logic 9 out of two computers right now. One is my Mac Pro in my home studio and the other is with my new MacBook Pro at a different location. So my goal is to be able to carry files from one mac to the other for because sometimes I work at home and sometimes at the studio.

I would like to have Logic X, however my Mac Pro 2006 won't allow OS Mavericks and therefore I can't install Logic X on it.

In this case, is it important that I keep Logic 9 on my MacBook Pro also or can I upgrade that one? In other words, can a Logic X file be open in Logic 9 and vice versa?

You can open Logic Pro 9 songs in Logic X, but you can't open LPX songs in LP9. AFAIK, there has never been a version of Logic from at least version 6 that could open songs from a newer version of Logic.

BTW, LPX runs on Mountain Lion (10.8) too, but I don't think that your Mac Pro can run that, either.

I also have the Mac Pro 1,1 running OSX 10.7.5, and Logic 10.0.4 with a very simple fix. My understanding is that this doesn't work with latest version of Logic 10.0.5.

You can install LPX on your MBP without it interfering with L9.

LPX can open L9 files, but L9 cannot open the new .logicx file format.

L9 is still on installed on the Mac Pro, but I chose not to install it when recently upgrading my MBP hard drives.

It would most certainly be worth upgrading to LPX on your MBP if for no other reason than to get familiar with it as it is the future. :hippy:
Seriously, it's a substantial upgrade with powerful new features. In my case, I've essentially not used Logic 9 since July 16th, 2013.

You'll obviously need to purchase Logic Pro X and install it on your MBP. Smart move no matter what! The issue will be that at this time, 10.0.5 is the most currently available version. The procedure below won't work. But if you have 10.0.4 or lower, it will.

Drag a copy of the application LPX 10.0.4 or lower on to a Thumb drive or external hd. Copy it to your Mac Pro1,1.

Right-click on Logic 10.x>Show Package Contents>Contents folder>Info.plist document

Open the Info.plist document in Text Edit (Make a duplicate as a safety on your desk top.)

In the Text Edit Edit menu, select Find, enter 10.8.4 as shown in the attachment, then change text "8" to "7" so that the line reads: <string>10.7.4</string>

Save and close.

Launch LPX.

I now have L9, and all versions of LPX through 10.0.4 on my MP1,1.
Don't get me started on why the MP1,1 can't run ML.
It can with a convoluted procedure that's well documented on the web.
