Logic Pro 9 SnowLeopard & Vienna Ensemble Pro server

Hi All,

I have a 2 computer setup. The 2nd computer is running Snow Leopard. My main computer is still on 10.5.8. I get some Low Memory messages. I know this has been discussed in the past but I'm still fuzzy about upgrading to SL. I don't know what kind of problems one encounters with the 32b bridge for plugins. I guess most of my fx plugins are 32b.

Here's my system configuration and my questions.

My system is:

Main computer - OS 10.5.8 MacPro Nehalem 8 core 2.26 with 24 GB ram
and Logic 9.1
2nd computer - OS 10.6.3 MacPro Xeon serving as a host for Vienna
Ensemble Pro server.

I run Vienna Ensemble Pro server on the main computer to host about 4
instances of Stylus.

I'm scoring a TV series and the music is all VI, midi and apple loops.

I have to deliver 7 stereo stems, one being a full mix and the others
being the splits. Eli Krantzberg created a template for me that has 7
stereo stems.

Because of the template's configuration, I can't add fx to individual
tracks with a bus. I can only insert on the stem track and insert
individual delays or compression on the individual tracks.

I get Low Memory warnings every once in a while. I have an internal
drive on my main computer with a SuperDuper backup of my system drive.

My questions are:

1. Would upgrading to Snow Leopard solve my Low Memory problem?

2. If I install SL on my internal backup, will I have to buy another
East West Storm Drum license because the system I.D. has changed?
Spectrasonics is pretty forgiving about adding new licenses. I have a
bunch of Kontakt instruments. If this works satisfactorily, could I
continue to use that as the system drive or would it be better to take
it out and put it into the original system drive slot?

Thanks!

1) If you are running SL in 64 bit mode with 24 gig of ram, you should be fine.

2) The current Play version of Storm drum is an iLok license. Is it on the main computer now? If so, you don't need to buy a new license. If you have the olve version of Storm Drum, you should also be fine using Service Center to reauthorize your Kontakt libraries. You can actually get away with 2 (or even up to 4 or 5 computers) authorizations no problems.

Hi George,
Yes, my PLAY is on my main computer. I'll check my iLok to see if I registered it to it or not.
So it is true that the Low Memory warnings will disappear? Are the Logic plugins 64 bit?
I'll try it out. Thanks!

Play 2.x, kontakt 3.5 and 4.x, VSE Pro 4.x ALL have 64 bit sample storage area regardless of the user being in 10.5.x or 10.6.x... sadly, they are not the thing that cause Logic Pro's low memory issues. Logic itself seems to have issues clearing out ram when a user is loading and testing large sounds...

Now, if you have lots of ram, and are running in 64 bit mode, you SHOULD be good to go. I have never seen a low memory dialog on my 8 gig mac pro running in 64 bit mode...

Yes, all of Logic's plugins are 64 bit when running the 64 bit version of Logic , and for the record, the EXS has a memory server that also works in 64 bit mode IF your computer has more than 5 gig of ram and you enable it in the exs preferences.

There is also a thread over at Logic Pro Help's forum that has an updated list of 64 bit plug-ins. LUG is my main forum, but LPH is a great secondary source of info for me as well, and David is a great guy (as well as a source of work for me... for disclosure), his Logic books are a good place for beginners (or expert) users of Logic to get a good tutorial on the newest features of Logic.

I don't know any full time composers using Logic in 64 bit mode, BUT that is only because most are in the middle or end of current projects. I expect with the new 12 core Mac's now available, that the next step will be a 24 gig 4 TB HD, OS 10.6 in 64 bit mode will become more common... I ram my own system in 64 bit mode for a while (the big issue is hardware drivers) and found it to be completely stable... with only the occasional issue with the 32 bit bridge app crashing... but that was less than I see on a current Logic 9/32 bit rig. unfortunately ALL systems crash every now and then, especially when you consider what we do with them.

The best thing a user can do with Logic is to reboot a few times a day (or every 3d cue worked on)... it clears the system, and any ram issues are resolved.

Good luck
