Logic Pro 9 So, what is your "favorite" iPad Logic control app?

OK, I've tried a batch of control app for Logic on my iPad.

Some seem ok (Yamaha's fader app is exceptional, but doesn't do track based automation, only region), some so so (no names), and some, well lets just say, I got em, bought a few that I will NEVER use, and wish I'd spent my $$ better ways.

What is your favorite, and why? Needs to be an iPad app, any cost is ok as long as it works, so Luggers, let's hear what you like, ok?

I guess it all comes down to the setting you are using it for, so I'll start with describing my workflow. For the most part I write music for radio and TV-commercials or I record voiceovers or sing BV-vocals. My need for a controller is when I'm in the booth playing instruments or recording my voice singing or doing a voiceover. I have a dedicated monitor showing the text or score together with input monitoring with Spectre. The screen in my recording booth often looks like this:

I get the information I need from that, so what I need is basic transport controls really.

I have no use for mixing on the iPad, I just need to record enable, start stop and also control the gain... (but gain..that's not that simple.) I also would like to sort the takes when I'm recording BGVocals, but haven't found a way to do that properly.

So to the controllers. I don't like any of them. E.G on my system TouchOsc is unusable. Sometimes it works, often not. It has extreme latency. At least on my system. I've tried several and the one that works best for me, is DAWremote on my iPhone. I know you asked for iPad, but none of them workes for me.

When I saw the Lemur and iPad I really longed for a touchscreen controller, but the more I try it the more I long for real faders.

I've used AC-7 which I think looks good, and it worked relatively well too, but I honestly haven't gotten that excited about any of them. I've owned the Logic Control, Euphonix controllers, Frontier Designs stuff, iOS stuff, and the truth is, I'm never actually that happy with any of them after a while. Maybe it's me. But I guess what I really want is an actual physical mixer with faders and knobs that also shows the exact software faders in Logic, basically a touchscreen with physical faders sticking out of it. Don't think that exists...

I've also owned the Logic control but didn't actually use it... The faders were fine, but the rest.. not so much. I want faders, metering, full naming.. A modern controller, not a 8 character LCD from the 90's... 🙂

Surely a high quality control surface with awesome iPad integration is right up apples ally? It's a shame the emagic/mackie partnership failed after the original Logic control, especially seeing as mackie seem to be embracing iPad type interfacing in some of their newer mixers. I use a mackie control but it does lack some quite critical features, like dedicated metering, "next gen" screens incorporating graphical representations rather than just text and a more appropriate form factor. I can definitely see a market for a hybrid control surface displaying plugin GUIs with easy assignable, plugin specific physical knobs and faders, I don't want to have to page through hundreds of randomly ordered parameters only to find the next one I need it 5/6 pages away! Come on apple, you pride yourself on slick human interface devices, surely you can put jony Ive's design prowess to this! (rant over!)

I use V-Control Pro, it has a V-window feature that allow you to control your desktop and any running app.

Great for plug because you don't have to learn a new gui.

Yea, I grabbed the Nyrinck V-Control Pro app last night after a client asked me to investigate it.

It uses OSC, and I was able to crash Logic (boo) with it by selecting a track without a Hyper Edit and asking to do that function. I'll have to contact them about this one.

That said, $50 seems like allot of $$$ to pay for any iOs app, but then again, the cost's for these apps are really way below what they would cost if it were sold for the Mac.

The fact that I can do track based editing, and it has the ability to do the plug-in interface and edit by touch, is FANTASTIC! Also, being able to use multiple faders at once is cool and makes using a mouse a real drag.

So, I'll play with it and see if I can use the Yamaha App with it at the same time (since I use it for control of 3d party plug-ins on slave computers) and see if I can do this WITHOUT the issues I normally have trying to achieve this (sync issues, Logic dialog boxes complaining about missing hardware, etc).

Still interested in other options. I have Lemur but have been stumped so far setting it up...

Hey All,

I have a related question: Can anyone suggest an app to use for the iPhone to control Logic's transport?

Obviously the iPhone is a very small interface and I am not looking for a full fledged virtual control surface. But what I would like to be able to do is control Logic's basic transport functions, record enable buttons, maybe a few key commands or key strokes if possible (for when I am at the drum set across the room).

Currently I'm using a wireless Apple keyboard. But it's buggy, losing connection all the time. I think it is just a bit too far away from my tower.

Any ideas?

I had touch osc and moved to v-control on my iPad, but your post reminded me that I have touch osc for the iPhone. It comes with a logic template with basic transports.

I had forgotten about it, but your post is a great idea for when I don't want the whole surface control on the iPad and a small phone size transport is all I need. I'll have to revisit touch osc on my iPhone and see how it performs.

BTW it's $9.99 and you need a wifi connection obviously. You could also make your own template with fewer controls.

Thanks for both suggestions. I have a couple of questions though.

1. I'm running Logic on a Mac Pro tower. I have an Airport Extreme base station which is connected by ethernet to the tower. There is a wireless network set up (for my laptop, iPhone, girlfriend's PC, and her iPad), but the tower itself doesn't actually have an airport card in it or wifi capabilities. Will this setup work with these iphone apps? I'm pretty sure the answer is yes, since the tower is technically on the network (albeit by means of an ethernet cable), but just want to double check.

2. I do actually have a physical Mackie Control Universal control surface (and I sometimes use Automap with my Novation keyboard too). Will either of these (particularly the Mackie Control) conflict with the setup for either of the iPhone apps mentioned? I ask because in the DAWremote Logic video, the setup clearly involves a driver that looks like the Mackie Control icon in Logic's control surface setup window.

Touch OSC works great for the iPhone and ipad. I'm currently using v-control pro and like that it works with all my daws. But, if I was just using logic and didn't want to spend all the money then I'd be happy with touch OSC or another good (logic only) app is ip touch.

1. I have an odd but similar setup. I have no network connectivity in my studio so I setup an AirPort Extreme as a wifi extender and have my Mac Pro connected to the Ethernet port. All of these work without issue on my setup and I would expect it to work on yours too. Some of them use the Mac's built in network midi driver which uses Bonjour for auto-discovery.

2. Shouldn't be a problem. I setup multiple control apps running on different iPhones/iPads and was able to control with one and watch all the others move. I had a Mackie compatible physical controller awhile back and I was also able to move controls on the ipad and watch them move on it. As you add the devices, logic automatically detects them and creates new devices in the control surfaces preferences. So it shouldn't mess with your existing controller device in logic. It should create a new one.

Use a USB extension and a USB keyboard? I like seeing the Logic Arrange window when I'm recording myself with a mic so that I can keep takes and change tracks etc.

V-Control Pro.
Very reliable, well supported and it acts as a desktop remote control as well.
You can (optionally) control the plugins via their very own GUI knobs faders, levels, etc...saving you from having to learn/master an extra layer of interface to finally control your DAW/plugins!

Hey Atlas,
Ney control has a MAJOR bug with Midi Over Lan on a slave system. It has consistently brought our slave Windows 7/VEpro system down with the BSOD EVERY time we have tried to use it.

it's cool, hope they can fix the bug, right now it's a $50 investment in nothing...

Bummer. Sure looks awesome.
