Logic Pro 9 Sounds silly - but… which JamPacks have I installed?

Watching a Logic Pro 9 screencast today, I noticed that the order of software instruments in the presenter's Library was very different from mine - in respect, it seemed, of which Jam Packs were loaded. His actually listed 'Jam Pack 1', 'Jam Pack 2', 'Jam Pack 3' etc at the bottom of his list.

Although I did a complete install from the Pro/Studio DVDs (albeit an upgrade from Express), I don't have 'Symphonic Jam Pack' (or anything like it)... the one I'm most interested in.

Instead I have '01 Logic Instruments', '02 Acoustic Pianos', '03 Bass' etc down to '10 Orchestral', which leads to what I've always assumed was the Apple Symphony Jam Pack. After '14 Surround', I have what appears to be a duplicate GarageBand pair: 'Shared GarageBand Sett...', 'GarageBand' and only then two actual Jam Pack directories: 'Jam Pack Voices' and 'Jam Pack World Music'.

Does that seem right?

Does/do any of these correspond to the Apple Symphony Jam pack?

How can I confirm that I have all my software instruments installed correctly: do they correspond to a directory structure in the Finder?

Can I tidy them, remove the duplicates, make more sense of the names?

Actually, you have them... the instruments will be installed as EXS sounds (they don't get up into a special folder, they are blended with existing folders), and if you want to see the folder content, open your loop browser and select the folders popup (upper left have side).

Thanks 🙂 That's encouraging. What about the two 'GarageBand', 'Shared GarageBand Sett...' folders? They seem identical. Remove one? Tidy up?

Hi Mark,

If you look in the loop browser, you can see all the loop content pertaining to each specific jam pack by selecting/filtering the display from the drop down menu at the top of the browser.

The jam packs contain a combination of loops and EXS 24 instruments. So, the loops can be seen/managed from the loop browser. But the instruments from all the Jam packs, like George says, are blended and organized together in those EXS 24 instrument categories. So, it does look like you have them all.

As far as the shared GB settings; honestly, I have always found the way Apple installs have handled this to be a big mess. There is some duplication, but some is necessary due to some of the sample files being in CAF format versus aiff. If you start monkeying around with the sample files you might find that some of the GB instruments don't load properly when you call them up from within Logic. If it ain't broke, don't fix it...... is my advice; despite the fact that you might be able to clear some small amount of additional HD space. I find it's always a bit of hit and miss gamble trying to manage those GB samples.

Look, don't go moving stuff around. If you start trashing stuff you are going to really cause problems. There are index files and other stuff that will get corrupted, so just do yourself a favor and leave things as they are.


Do this: upper right hand corner, open your media tab, and select LOOPS. There is a popup on the right hand side of the LOOPS tab, press on it and you will see all the apple loop groups installed.

If you see the "Jam Pack Symphony Orchestra" they are there.

That's what I mean.

And again, don't go moving apple loops and instrument loop folders, you will really screw things up... heck, I do installs and tech support for a living, and it can get very confusing, for someone who is new to Logic and doesn't understand how completely screwy Apple actually made this stuff... well, I can come and fix it for you... but I charge $60 per hour, and it can take a couple of hours best case to get things back...

I hate messy dir. structures; but suppose I'm just going to have to live with it.
