Logic Pro Sounds silly - Library

Hi My first post so I hope I'm doing this the right way. I'm trying to get my head around Logic Pro X and struggling. I've searched in many places to try and solve this. Maybe its the terminology I'm using?

I'm trying to understand and use the library. My questions is how do I access all the patches available?
Today I noticed that if I clicked on the software bass track only a few patches were displayed in the library. If I clicked on the drummer track many more patches were available and another time while clicking around all the patches were shown. I don't know what I did but I can't do it again. How do I access all the patches?

When you have the Library displayed, it will show patches for whatever is selected in the channel strip. If you loaded a channel strip with lots of stuff, e.g. EQ open, a software instrument, reverb, compressor etc, then you'll notice a little blue arrow next to one of the slots in the channel strip.

It's probably next to the top slot - Setting. If so, the Library will display all patches for Channel Strip settings - very general.

If you click to the left of the instrument slot, let's say it's an EXS24, then the Library will show all patches for EXS24. If you click lower, e.g. on the EQ, then the Library shows all saved or Factory patches for EQ.

Maybe you had the Library showing patches for a plug-in that didn't have all that many patches. Be aware that the Library won't show Bass patches for the ES2 if you have an ES1 loaded - it just displays patches for the selected instrument or effect.

You could always place the blue triangle at the top slot (Channel Strip Setting) which displays all strip settings, then type "bass" into the search field. You should get plenty options that way.

The Library is indeed a very sneaky window. It looks very simple at first but the more you dig in, the more complex it gets.

You have to be aware of the following things:


Various Setting Formats:
Logic saves settings in different formats:
  • Patches (.patch)
  • Channel Strip Settings (.cst)
  • Plug-In Settings (.pst, .aupreset)
  • Sample Instrument (.exs)

Display Factors:
What Logic displays in the Library Window depends where you set that tiny blue rectangle in the Inspector Channel Strip (I call it "Display Indicator" in my book).
  • Settings Button: Displays Patches and Channel Strips
  • Software Instrument Button: Displays EXS Sample Instrument or Plugin Settings (if Software Instrument is anything other than an EXS24)
  • Audio FX Button: Displays the Plug-In Settings of Audio FX
  • MIDI FX Button: Displays the Plug-In Settings of MIDI FX
  • No Button: There is no blue Display Indicator on an External MIDI Track.


Other DisplayFactors:
And here are a few more things that can influence what Logic displays in the Library Window.
  • Patches and Channel Strip Settings depend on the Channel Strip Type (Audio, Instrument, Aux, etc.). They show only the settings "appropriate" for them. However, you can overwrite that by ctr+op+click on the Settings button which shows the settings for all Channel Strip Types.
  • An external MIDI Track doesn't have an "audio" Channel Strip. It is a "fake Channel Strip that has MIDI controllers. In that case the Library will display MIDI Ports (how about that for change)
  • The Library will display always display Factory Settings but user settings are only displayed if you have saved
  • at least one settings (in that specific category)
  • Selecting a Track/Channel will change the display to show the currently loaded Patch


Once you keep all those factors in mind, then you might know what is actually displayed in the Library Window. To take the guess work out a little, I explain the Library( and all that stuff I just mentioned) in great details in my book "Logic Pro X - How it Works".

I really wish there was some way to identify which of the displayed results are patches and which are channel strip settings when in the channel strip section of the Library interface.
