Logic Pro 9 Stop playhead from following playback

I'm a PT user that has been trying to switch over into Logic. How do I keep the playhead from following the playback?

If you're talking about the playhead scrolling through the arrange window and keeping up with what's currently playing, click the "Catch Playhead" button at the top left of the arrange window. It's also available in the sample editor and several other editors.

Hey Ken,

Thanks so much for your quick reply. But I'm trying to figure out how keep the playhead from starting back up from where I stopped it at. Say for instance I clicked on bar 20 and then hit play, then I stopped at bar 30. When I hit play again the playhead will start up at bar 30 and I want it to start up at where I originally clicked which was bar 20. In PT it was simply turning on or off "insertion follows playback." Hopefully this helps.

You could right-(control)-click on the Play button and check the item "Play From Last Locate Position". The items above it take precedence if checked and active; so if you've checked "Play from Cycle" and there is an active cycle region it would play from there instead.

Older Logic users (pre-version 9) are used to using the Cycle Locators to keep playback always from one spot - often in conjunction with the Command or button "Set Locators by Regions/Events". If you right-(control)-click on the Cycle button in Logic 9, you can choose various Auto-Set options for the Cycle Locators. including "Auto-Set By Region Selection".

All in all, there are a glut of options!

Also, a quick key command that works for me on my laptop keyboard is to hit the Enter key and it will begin playback from where you last positioned the playhead. If I understand your last post, I think that's a simple way to do that. I use that all the time editing spoken word stuff.

With the Enter key set to "play" (which is the default assignment in the US keyboard with numeric keypad set), when you hit it twice, it will play from the previous position you started playback from. When you hit it just once, it continues from where the playhead stopped at. So, you get the best of both worlds.

You could also think about using the marquee tool. A short click will create a one pixel marquee line and playback will always start from that point when you hit the spacebar or enter key; until you dismiss it by clicking in the background with the regular pointer tool.

Thanks Eli! That marquee tool really works a lot like PT. Hopefully soon I will be able a full time logic user. The more I use it the more I enjoy it! Thanks again! I'm sure I'll be hitting you guys up for more questions soon.
