Logic Pro 8 Switching From Logic 5 PC to Logic 8

Hi Guys, I hope this is the correct subforum. Didn't really fit into "Legacy"...

I'm currently working with Logic 5 for PC, but since I own Mac I'm thinking about to switch. However, there are a few functions I miss with Logic 8 and still seemed to work with Logic 7.

1.) I have a few hardware synth controlled by midi. In Logic 5 to send the program patches I simply selected the first midi track in the arrange window and held down the cursor down key. THen all synths (they are arranged as multi-instrumetns) got a program change message. This doesn't work anymore with Logic 8. Is there a way to have this feature again? I hate messing around with small blocks containing the program change settings.

And 2.) as usual in Trance music I have a few channels sidechained. I route them onto a bus with a compressor insert. THen I have a send way from the kick onto a second bus, where I cut the lows to keep the attack only as a trigger signal. This bus is the sidechain signal for the first bus' compressor. In Logic 8 the inserted EQ on the second bus doesn't affect the sidechain signal of Bus 1 compressor. Is there a way to change it, like it worked in Logic 5?

Thanks for answers.

1. I am sorry but back when I used MIDI modules, and it has been years, I always just inserted the program changes in the Event List or in the Object Parameter box so I cannot help you. Try posting this at Logic Pro Help. There are some MIDI hardware guys there.

2. I am not aware of any change in sidechaining between LP7 and LP8 and back in the LP5 days I had no idea what a sidechain was. Now I have a tutorial on it in my book "Going Pro With Logic Pro 8" and I use it so rarely I have to consult my own book when I want to do so 🙂

I am sorry this is not much help, but I did not want you to feel ignored.

Hi, I have had exactly this problem since switching to Logic 8 from 7. I use a Roland SC88Pro and used to like being able to simply hold down the 'down arrow' and send the Program numbers.

Here's what I do now (if you don't want to insert program numbers in the event list);

1. Open the Mixer
2. View> MIDI Track Components> Program (tick this)
3. Options> Send All MIDI Mixer Data

This will send out all your Program numbers.

Alternatively, the quick way to insert Program numbers etc is;
1. In the Arrange Window
2. MIDI>Insert Instrument MIDI settings as Events

This will insert Pan & Volume & Program in the event list.
Hope this helps.

I've solved the issue now by activating the send of all program changes after loading of the song. However, I noticed that it still worked in version 8.0.0 of Logic Express, but doesn't anymore in 8.0.2.

Also about the side chaining thing: seems like this works again... Dunno if I did something wrong at the first trys...

Should be straight forward with the Logic compressor. Since you can select an audio channel or a bus as sidechain just send your equalized signal to any free bus and select this bus as sidechain in the compressor. Not much that could go wrong. Maybe you selected the wrong bus or there was already going something else over this bus.

Btw, you may have seen that Logic 8 uses Aux channels rather than the old bus object (bus channelstrip). This can lead to confusion. The Aux does the same, the difference is that you can select any bus as input and it has sends. The Aux is more flexible than the bus object and recommended.
