Logic Pro 9 Sync Logic to ProTools

Hi,
I've been scoring a TV series and have created a music library of cues. A music editor has edited cues to a new episode. I have the tempo numbers for each cue but the editor is not working to a tempo grid in PT.

I presently use IAC to sync PT and Logic when bouncing stems from Logic into PT.

Can anyone suggest a way in which I could have the 2 apps tempo synced, and I could add beats and arps sync to the ProTools music edit. I understand that the music editing in PT will have to change so that it's sync to some kind of tempo grid.

I know that this is complicated and that I might have to change my routing / hardware perhaps.

Export a midi file from logic. Doesn't matter what. Then import that file into pro tools, which should ask if you want to include tempo info... Viola' instant tempo map.

I may be missing a few variables as it has been awhile since I've done this, but that is the basic recipe.

That's an interesting idea! The trick here is that the sync originates with ProTools in that that is where the music editing is being done. I suspect the editor will have to use some kind of tempo grid with the editor being careful to respect divisions.

Then I have to match the tempo in Logic and, with the 2 in sync, record my additional tracks into Logic. I'm still fuzzy about how it will be done but as I learn more, I'll post to the LUG.

Well, it should be no problem. Because the sync is via smpte frame, it really has no bearing on the tempos. The tempo map in pt is a reference should they need it. Run logic as you normally would.

My experience with editors working in PT is that they don't seem to care to reference tempo maps, it may not even be useful to them. However if you are doing the editing in PT the maps will be very nice to have.

Well, if the source audio is from logic, experiment with that midi import trick to get the same tempo map. Otherwise you'll need to get involved with creating a tempo map manually in PT. It's not difficult, once you sort out the commands and quirks etc. You might even be able to use beat detective, but I've always found doing it manually was faster for me.

Spoken like a true composer... We had a hell session last week with a client that had no concept of scoring to tempo. "can't you turn the tempo off?" ummmm... "we just want to move stuff around" oooooooookay.

Turn the tempo off... that's a good one🙂 I've composed and recorded music that was 'all feeling' and didn't follow a click track so maybe that's what your client was trying to say?

Yes, except that it was a beat driven mashup with lots of flex edits and tempo matching... Eventually we did just move into a new session and completely ignored tempo as best we could.

thats worth putting in your signature!!! getting the clients job $2k, hitting all the sync points using a complicated tempo map that then sounds seamless $4k, hearing them say "can't you turn the tempo off?" "we just want to move stuff around" - priceless

ive had similar experiences and this is where the cymbal roll and anything labelled "big impacts" is your friend.. i gave up trying to get it to make "musical "sense years ago, if it does thats a bonus..

Hi Bob,
We've done some tempo map tests and I think it will work quite elegantly. Exporting a tempo may from PT will give me the tempo, meter and markers. Once I've imported it into Logic, Logic can be the master with PT following in IAC mode. I'll try it this coming week for the next episode that I'll be scoring but I expect it to work well.
Was your 'mashup' music for film or TV?

I wouldn't count on Pro Tools markers getting exported and imported into Logic via a standard midi file. I'm not a hundred percent certain, but I'd be surprised if they got included in the export/import. Tempo and meter changes should.

Unless I'm dreaming, I think I saw PT markers imported into Logic yesterday when we did a test, just before you stopped by🙂 Test #2 will be tomorrow. I'll let you know how it goes.
