Logic Pro Tempo & expression controllers from keyboard

Hi everybody,

Here I am back with another small problem.

For my recent work, I would want to use my keyboard controllers to record expression and tempo variation.

1. would be the mod wheel for expression (CC11 whereas mod wheel is usually CC1)
2. would be the pitch bend wheel to control the tempo variations. The main tempo is set to the mid position of the pitch wheel.

BUT, I could no way and nowhere find how to achieve this in Logic Pro X. How should I start and can I switch from CC1 to CC11 to be able to use the mod wheel for expression?

Important: this is for realtime recording, not only for playback.

All help is welcome! 😉

Thanks Peter,

You can see that I'm quite new to Logic (and to any DAW actually). I've been composing music for more than 30 years now, but always with pen and paper, and from 1998 on with notation software (MPP, Finale, Notion). The step towards Logic was in November of last year...
I thought that you needed a special lane for parameters such as volume, velocity, expression... That's why I created that lane. Obviously, I was wrong. The learning process is one with trial and error and when you're lucky, with good experienced people like yourself helping to fasten up that tedious process.
OK, I will try it the much simpler way as you've suggested. Most of the volume changes have been made in velocity, but that way you can't make volume changes within notes (unless you dived them into many tied notes). With expression this is possible and since I work with VSL, expression is a part of the instrument's dynamic (CC11).

And I have a small question about the harpsichord. It is clear that the H. doesn't have the possibility (in VSL anyway) to change velocities (which is the case in real instruments as well). But when I need a volume reduction (see it as a register), how can I realise that in the best possible way? Volume reduction for a region (CC7)?

This is the practical exercise I'm working with for the moment. In the middle part, the H. should sound half as loud (on a real instrument: decoupled keyboard):

Many thanks for all your effort,

In MIDI Draw, where you see the modulation curve (screenshot in my last post) you can also draw volume automation.

In this particular case I am not sure if region automation is the best method. The advantage of region automation is that it is bound to the region. On the other hand, track automation can also get shifted when you move a region. I prefer track automation because of the better display and easier access.

Furthermore, with track automation you could automate a gain plugin instead of the volume fader (what CC7 would do). This keeps the volume fader free for mixing and later automation.

It's your decision which kind of automation you use in which situation. Consult the Logic manual, it describes both methods.
