Transferring computers...

So my old G4 died, and I'm going to buy a new Mac Pro to replace it.

Once I get it, what the best way to transfer all my licenses for Logic and third-party plugins? Since the old machine is dead, I was thinking I would just put the hard drives from the old machine into the new one, but I'm not sure if they would be recognized there.

Also, is there a way to transfer all my stored bookmarks, passwords, etc. from old to new computer?

Check out the Migration Assistant in the OS X Utilities folder. This is a great way of migrating your User folder and other various settings between systems.
 
I am about to migrate myself. I ordered the 8-core today and will receive it after the 24th but before the 30th of this month.
During the last couple of weeks I have checked this whole licence moving stuff out and all of my plugins can just be downloaded and authorized on the new computer. Sonorus ie can be installed on as many computers as you like as long as they belong to you. XLN (addictive drums) allows the plugin to be installed on two different machines. In other cases you will have to move the plugin by changing the host on the website.... and of course all those who needs a dongle is no problem either.
Anyway none of the plugins needs the old computer to make the new one run as long as you have the serial numbers, log ins etc.
Of course you may have plugins that won't allow this but I have checked with Camel, FabFilter, GForce, Ohm Force, PSP, Sonalksis, Uhe, XLN and WaveMachine Labs (drumagog) and all of these have informed me that I can migrate without the old computer.
I am not from a Mac background, I bought my first and only Mac 5 and a half years ago to stay with Logic but the Migration Assistant sounds like it can take care of anything else.
 
Migration assistant sounds great. Unfortunately, my G4 is dead (won't power up), if I can't get it to boot I can't use Migration Assistant.

If I can't boot it, should I take my old ATA drives to a store and have them transfer the HD contents from to a new SATA drive and then stick that in the new machine? Or is there a better/cheaper/easier way?
 
It depend what you need from it, if it's just shortcuts and that kind of thing it may be simpler to just redo it. On the other hand if you have samples, presets and even worse unbacked up material, it may be the only way. I wonder if an old PC couldn't do the job too though, they aren't really that rare🙂

Buy an external FireWire (or USB?) case for ATA Disks and plug it to your new Mac Pro - this should work to save your Data.
If you like to use the migration assistent, borrow an PPC Mac and boot up with your external drive (works only with FW - NOT with USB!) and link this machine over Ethernet, WLAN or Firewire to your new Mac Pro.

BTW: Which version of OS X do you use? My proposal should work at least with 10.5.

I'd like to use Migration Assistant for whatever I can, but I don't know anybody that has a PPC mac.

Oh wait, we have an old MacBook, maybe that would work? I'll have to check that out.

The dead G4 is (was) using 10.4.11 .
