Upgrading my Macbook Pro

I am seriously thinking about upgrading to the Macbook Pro 2.5GHz Quad-core Intel Core i7. I run Logic 9.1.6. and you would laugh if you saw all of the workarounds I have to do to complete a project on my current rig.

-My needs are to continue to be mobile, but get it as blazing as I can for as cheap as I can. I run tons of plugs, soft synths, heavy editing, and hi track counts.

-I am weighing the Solid State Drive vs the 750GB Serial ATA Drive @ 7200 rpm as well as RAM expansion...

I can't get it all, so I need help maximizing a purchase.

I haven't moved to Lion so I have been educating myself to see if my 3rd party software is compatible since these machines ship with the new OS.

I would appreciate any input

If it was me I'd get the machine with maximum RAM. If you buy with the minimum 2 x 2 sticks you have to replace those with 2 x 4 anyway rather than keeping them and adding more, so I don't know how much you'd gain by doing that.


I think you'll like the SSD, provided it has enough capacity.


If money was tight I'd get the 128 GB and use an external for storing archived or little used projects.

If you find you need more, because the MBP has thunderbolt there should be no performance issues using an external SSD for recording, so I could add that later if and when I could afford to.

However if I could afford to add get it specced up with the 500 SSD internal, I'm not sure how feasible it is to upgrade an internal 128 to a 500 later on.

So far Lion has been very good with odic and plugins. It's a little while getting used to a few of Lions new little foibles though.
 
Thanks Pete.. what are your thoughts on the RAM upgrade kits like the OWC (2x8GB).

George.. what I should have said is 3rd party plugs. And I only mention that because I haven't moved to 64bit. I am an upgrade turtle apparently.
 
I'm clearly not Pete :) but my experience with OWC (Macsales) has been very good over the years, with a decent return/refund policy where necessary. Having said that, I've never had a bad stick of RAM from them and I've bought quite a lot...
